Look-In: Emotional Times of Late See The Tar Heels slip into The University of Dayton Arena just a tad late for yesterday’s open practice because of some flight delays. Dayton is the traditional home of NCAA play-in games since the inception of that feature. This is the first time that Carolina has participated in the play-in. History is everywhere you look. Elvis performed in the UD Arena. It will be packed with a sell-out attendance of 13, 409 for the games tonight (First game, 6:40 between Alabama St. and St. Francis, both 16 seeds). The Tar Heels and The Aztecs will tip off around 9:10. Carolina wants to go fast and San Diego State wants to go slow. The Aztecs are Big, The Tar Heels not so much. Carolina scores (#22 in the nation), San Diego does not (#111). We’ve got a bit of an irresistible force meets immovable object challenge going on for this meeting.

Magoon Gwath (#0, 7-0, 8.5 ppg, 5.3 rpg) blocks 2.6 shots per game and is returning from missing 5 games with a knee injury. He sometimes shoots from the arc, hitting 37% on 43 attempts. The spearhead of the Aztec attack are Nick Boyd (#2, 6-3, 13.4 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 4 apg – 36% from Three) and Miles Byrd (#21, 6-7, 12.6 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 2.8 apg with 2 steals per). The supporting cast is comprised of 6-10 Jared Coleman-Jones who averages 7 points and 5 rebounds. Sophomore Miles Heide is 6-10 and scores at a 4 ppg clip and grabs 3.6 rpg. B.J. Davis is a 6-2 backcourt man averaging 9 ppg and shoots 37% from Three. Key reserves are 6-8 Pat Compton (#5, 5.4 ppg, 2.5 rpg), #3 Wayne McKinney (6-0, 6.2 ppg), and #24 Taj Degourville (6-5, 5.3, 2.6 rpg). Many contribute to the Aztec game plan. They all play hard for Coach Brian Dutcher (long-time assistant to Steve Fisher and chief recruiter in those times for the Fab Five).

Frontcourt: Jalen Washington is a smart guy. Lubin is not biorhythmically inclined apparently and dancing to his very own tune. Claude is strong. Brown good to go.

Wings: Jackson is trending upward and topped out intellectually while The Chatham Spider Drake Powell is physically primed and also on a genius track. Jay’Len Withers joins Jackson and Powell in the Mensa Club, adding good ‘want-to.’ Cade Tyson has a solid X-Factor going.

Guards: Smart and Calm is Cadeau while R.J. Davis is elevated of mind and motivated. Seth Trimble is reaching for the sky physically while maintaining a calculating demeanor aided by a rising Intel Arc.

Overall: Fresh Start. Clean Slate. Second Chance. All that and the enmity of fans in West Virginia, Indiana, Idaho, Ohio, and the media. The Governor of The Mountain State has threatened to sue over UNC’s selection. Stephen A. Smith (talking head) has said “this is a disgraceful thing.” The play-in bid is a “miscarriage of justice” for CBS sideline reporter John Rothstein. Dookies Jason Williams and Jay Bilious were appalled. Such Locker Room Bulletin Board material is much appreciated for the motivational value it provides. Much love to them all for the assists.

Carolina looks to be on the rise the dook bump in the ACC Tournament notwithstanding and ought to carry through with that pattern. The contrast tonight will be stark otherwise. San Diego State wants to hold Carolina under 70 points so watch the pace – once again, how the Tar Heels get out of the gate will be crucial – leaving Gwath and company in their dust is key for Carolina. And the most important detail there is Defensive Pressure and Mindfulness. No one in the top eight has an I-Arc below 60 and several sport sky-high 100s. Controlling the 94 X 50 is the goal. Playing Hard and Playing Smart and Playing Together. Las Vegas says Carolina by 4.5. Biorhythms say UNC by 7.

My favorite
The Chatham Spider Drake Powell is physically primed and also on a genius track.

We make fun of the Mountain West every year for getting like 6 teams in and having 1 left after the first weekend. Granted, SDST is usually the one but hopefully no get back tonight

SDST rates 46 in KP which is 1 spot above SMU. UNC hasn't played many teams in this tier all year. UCLA at 27 and Pitt at 61 are the two closest

I mustn't make inappropriate Aztec jokes.

I hope we win the game bigly.
My daughter started at SDSU. There has been some push back on changing the mascot. So, they begin orientation with an homage to the native Kumeyaay people, on whose land SDSU now sits. Not sure how that resolves the Aztec issue, who lived 1,000 miles to the south, but they are clearly not totally comfortable with their mascot choice.

Fun Dayton fact. It is the closest airport to Indianapolis when all the RDU flights are sold out and you need to pick up your sister for a last minute trip to the Final Four.

Yeah, I was actually just doing random web-surfing to see how they became the Aztecs and ran across enough stuff from SDSU that made it seem like they get that it's a bit random and maybe not cool.

It looked like they had a committee to examine the entire issue, but I couldn't see any updates from that committee in about 3 years.

Here is an SDSU fun fact. After their Final Four run, their applications went through the roof -- especially out of state kids who want to go to school in San Diego. They had 118,000 applications this year and the total enrollment is 37,000 (almost all of which is undergrad).

This should be a good game. The current line that I saw is Carolina - 4.5. I think Carolina can pull it out, but I would take San Diego State + 4.5.
