How are the Republicans in Raleigh - who favor NCState much more than UNC - going to react? The Board of Governors for the UNC University system? Somebody said a couple of weeks ago to look for lolstate to fire their coach now that Mack has been canned. No way the PTB in Rawlee allow UNC to get "a leg up" on all of this stuff. Look for Bill Cowher or Jimmy Jones to come out of the broadcast booth and sign on at State - using my tax dollars to buy him. They'll probably shuffle some Public School funds to pay his contract.
I don’t think the BOG really have the direct influence to either sabotage this move or compel NCST to do anything to step up their game in response. If State wants to hire a big name coach or increase their NIL/resource allocation to the football program by orders of magnitude like UNC just did then their own boosters and BOT will have to make it happen.

I’m just spitballing but I think the attempt to keep us on level playing field will come when/if UNC attempts to leave the ACC and joiin SEC/BIG. That will be something every State fan who has ever lived will be weeping and wailing and gnashing their teeth. Hell on earth for them and they will do everything they can to stop it.

This is the greatest non game day related day in the history of UNC football.

The monumental nature of this hire has yet to dawn on many of you. There is no one short of Nick Saban that would have been a bigger hire than this one. This is an historic hire that will change the face and very nature of UNC athletics.
Your last sentence is exactly what I am afraid of. Any pretense of amateurism, or the student/athlete is now out the door. So long to the Carolina Way. Dean Smith turning over in his grave.

Now, did that approach mean we were less competitive in football? Maybe. But I don't care. Does it mean we may have a harder time competing in basketball? Maybe, but I haven't seen that yet. And even if it did I'm not sure I care about that either. This is college athletics, not minor leagues.

(Now, if you're going to try to convince me that a health football program means you're able to be more competitive in other sports, I'm willing to listed to that. But I'm still uncomfortable with this move overall)

Yeah I’ve heard the rumblings about the BOG trying to pull out the stops to keep us in the ACC or make a conference move contingent on bringing State along if and when that opportunity presents itself. With the way conference realignment works though I’ve stopped trying to even speculate about it.

In the meantime, all of the PTB in the state government that are State fans and hate UNC can’t really do anything to prop up the former program or drag down the latter.

No doubt. Decades and generations of resentment, envy, and jealously are a dangerous thing. It is true that at least some State fans hate UNC more than they love their own sports teams. If UNC got an SEC invite tomorrow Wolpfackers - and not just their average fans but those in state government and elsewhere - would move heaven and earth to ensure that NC State also got an invite. And if they didn't then they would work around the clock to make sure that UNC would never be allowed to leave the ACC. No way they'll ever willingly allow UNC to leave for another, better conference without them also tagging along. And if they weren't invited then they would cling tightly to UNC's legs as we tried to leave. That would likely be the final blow to them - UNC leaves for a better conference with greater revenue while they're left behind and can't even force UNC to play them anymore in any sport. Without their annual rivalry games against UNC I'm sure that State's athletic department would see their revenues drop significantly.

That's all well and good, but college athletics is changing with or without the participation of UNC. The Supreme Court ruling against the NCAA made it clear that the old way of doing things was gone. The train has left the station, so it's either get on board or get left behind. Pay to play is a fact of life.

I don't know how many football programs will eventually be in the top tier of competition, but it will be something less than the 134 schools that currently comprise the FBS. With this move, UNC has shown they intend to participate at that top level no matter how that situation plays out among the conferences.

Yep

The quaint notion of student-athlete no longer applies in the revenue sports.

My hope is that the non-revenue sports will not get sucked into the "guns for hire" vortex...

I want to root for UNC college sports teams. Rooting for semi-pro UNC sports teams has become a bitter pill to swallow.

Set the program back decades? We have a 53% winning percentage in our entire history. Set it back to what?
This is like when somebody in Bush's administration said we were going to bomb Afghanistan back into the Stone Age...

I don't think so. Dean played it as it laid, but the game has changed now. He might not have liked it, but I think he'd be on board with playing by whatever rules were in place. Kinda like how the Four Corners helped inaugurate the shot clock and he did pretty good with that...

Sorry. There is no "amateurism" in college football or basketball. Athletes can earn more as college stars than they can on their first contract in the pros now. Dean Smith was always an advocate for his players - so, I'm not sure he is "turning over in his grave" as much as he wouldn't recognize the sport in its current form. College Football and Basketball are professional leagues for younger athletes branded to various schools. This is reality whether you personally like it or not. And either UNC adapts to that reality or we become a minor brand amidst other more important brands in these sports.

Yes - Belichick is creating a "professional" program for UNC Football. We need the same in basketball or we will end up more a historical legacy than a powerhouse program.
