So the staff at ON3 have done a nice series about this I encourage you to go participate in that Site
Summary
New arena at Carolina North will cost 980 million dollars-including 180 mill in Parking Decks
Magic Sauce summary
A big time consultant survey has concluded
-200 mill can be raised in up front "get in the the front of the line for luxury boxes" money
-3,000 folks are willing to pay an avg of 20,000 a year per seat-60 mill a year forever-for "premium seats"
-16,000 seat arena with 20% of the seats being "premium"
Now a destination Center of Apts, sports Bars etc will likely be part of the overrall formula for cash flow
Thats is a lot of "geedush" as my ole pappy would say
Cool

I don't think the Carolina North construction plans envision (at least right now) going into the forested area. My understanding is that it will be built on the site of the airport, which is a quite large land area outside of the forest.

It's hard enough for non studens and non season ticket holders to get and afford tickets now. I imagine it will be even harder with a new building. But I am all for students having more seats around the court.

Look I am been thinking
I live on my State Pension I get 20 plus a year from Sec Sec Been saving for the nursing home
Maybe I should go all out and spend one year on a luxury seat at the new DES Center??
Now I would have to get my teeth whitened to fit it ? Whatchall think ?
Hey just kiddin ... It will be nice

I don't think it's that difficult to get Carolina Basketball tix except for the dook game and other extremely high profile games (like KU this year).

They are fairly pricey, depending on the game, but that's because they're not terribly cheap to get from the University. And they're not really out of line when compared to other similar entertainment options.

I am talking more about the price. It is pretty expensive for a family of four to go to most games, even for the nosebleed seats.

It’s expensive for a family of four to go to any “major league” sporting event. And I include the highest level of college football and basketball as major sports. UNC isn’t an outlier.

Cost in the early ‘80’s = $33/34 million for 21,750 seats, offices, and a great Natatorium with a chicken shit ceiling (Google Greg Louganis and UNC Pool and ceiling) and chicken shit seating for a swimming complex. UNC cut back on the swimming and diving complex because it looked like fundraising wouldn’t hit needed targets.

Still, it was a massive 22K seat arena AND a swimming/diving complex with a 25 yard x 50 meter pool.

In the early-mid 1980’s, there was a UNC Student ballot initiative that would have increased student fees by $5 or $10/year or $5 or $10/semester. That fee would have funded a long-term loan of $5-8 million and that loan would have meant student seats ringed the court - 8-15 rows deep of wooden bleachers…..2,500-3,500 students….think Carmichael on steroids.

The students of the early-mid ‘80’s voted down the fee. That brought on long-term privileges to good-to-great seats…….and students in the hinterlands.

Now, we’re headed to an off-campus arena that’ll cost $800 million to $1.5 billion. I guarantee a student fee will help fund the new arena.

Agree, although Major League Baseball may be the best option for families. I know the Braves offer some pretty cheap seat options for families.
