I would love to see our governor run for Thom Tillis' Senate seat in 2026

Running against Tillis will be tough. He's competent and fairly moderate which is Cooper's brand. Neither one is some firebrand campaigner or tweetstormer hoping to gin up controversy so advantage incumbent. If anyone has a shot of getting that Dem seat its Cooper but he would be the underdog. Budd doesn't come up until 2030 and Cooper might be too old to wait.

Cooper does best running against light weight right wingers like Forrest and Robinson. He was q good governor though especially following our last few.

Tillis is not a moderate. He is a Trump/ MAGA light and might be primaried unless he ups his Trump bootlicking game.

Tillis won reelection in 2020 by less than 2% despite the fact that Cunningham couldn't keep his dick in his pants. I don't think Roy will have that problem ;)

Doesn’t Budd run again in 2028?

He's done a good job of acting the moderate publicly but when push comes to shove he always votes MAGA. It will be quite interesting to see how he continues to walk the fence as election time nears. Can he survive being primaried? No matter who the R is, this will be one of the most heavily contested and funded 2026 Senate races.

I'd be interested to see how Cooper could do nationally. But he's 67, so he'd be 69 or so when kicking off the campaign and 71 or so when taking office. Would love to see Cooper, Beshear, Steve Bullock, etc types running on the Democratic side.

Agreed that Tillis is not a moderate, he only seems "more" moderate compared to the total loons running the party now. A couple of decades (or less) ago he would be considered a far-right, hard-right conservative like the Cheneys. And his two election wins have not been all that impressive. In 2014 - a great year for Republicans nationally - he barely beat a weak Democratic opponent, Kay Hagan, by only about 1.5%. And as you pointed out in 2020 he won a second term over a scandal-marred Cunningham by less than 2%. I still think if Cunningham had been able to keep his zipper closed and/or not been stupid enough to sext his mistress (and break up with her before the election) he probably would have beaten Tillis. At any rate he is definitely vulnerable I think, especially against a strong Democratic candidate like Cooper. Of course he may end up losing in the GOP primary anyway if some NC Trumper can win Trump's endorsement. Maybe Bishop?

Tillis is not a moderate nor has he ever acted like a moderate. What are you people talking about?
It's a brave new world...

Anyone left of Tucker Carlson, Nick Fuentes, and Stephen Miller is considered a moderate in the MAGA Party

I don't see Tillis being primaried. That happens less seldom with senators, and it's not like he's spoken out against Trump or anything. The fact of the matter is that every NC Senate race for the last 10+ years has been tight, so I'm sure the next one will be too. If there's strong anti-Trump sentiment, that might be enough to beat Tillis in a midterm.

Seems a no brainer that it is Tillis _Cooper Hoping for it anyway-cause Roy would have a good shot
