Top IRS lawyer pushed aside as DOGE seeks tax records, staffing cuts​

Elon Musk’s team has provoked concern among career staff over requests for tax records of undocumented immigrants.


“… William Paul, a career official named to the position in January, will be replaced by Andrew De Mello, who was nominated to be the Education Department’s inspector general during Trump’s first term, three of the people said. The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak with the media.

The internal reshuffling comes as career staff clash with DOGE officials over attempts to access taxpayer information widely viewed as some of the most closely guarded records in the federal government. The Trump Department of Homeland Security has pushed IRS officials for the addresses of about 700,000 undocumented immigrants — a request viewed by career staff as a violating the law. DOGE, which stands for Department of Government Efficiency, has also pressed for tax-agency systems, property and datasets. …”
 
The problem is that impoundment is already illegal. Writing another anti-impoundment law will not do anything to Trump's quest. Impoundment has to be addressed by the courts. Sure, in theory, it could be addressed by impeachment and conviction but we know that will never happen. If he wasn't impeached/convicted for J6, why would he be for impoundment.

I just don't understand the expectations for what Congress should do. Shut down Elon? How? What can Congress do that the executive can't just ignore? All resistance to usurpation of power has to go through the courts. It is the courts, after all, that guarantee the rule of law. Or, I should say, provide for it. Once upon a time, they guaranteed it. But without the courts' buy-in, nothing matters.

He “invaded” Los Angeles by releasing a bunch of water upstate that never had a chance to get to LA and is now evaporating uselessly instead of being saved for farmers to use in the dry summer.
