I work in vaccine development. It’s not great. Originally we had 3 different phase 3 trials of next-generation mRNA vaccines (seasonal flu, avian flu, COVID) originally slated to start this year. Those are now on hold to get a better picture of the new regulatory environment.
The WHO meeting to determine the composition of the next year’s seasonal flu vaccine is in a few weeks. The FDA meeting is a few weeks after that and typically relies on WHO data to make their decision. FDA almost always follows the WHO recommendation. FDA isn’t currently willing/able to communicate if they will have access to that data or when/if they they will hold the public meeting.
The regulatory uncertainty combined with slashing funds for research and development goes way beyond vaccines. It’s beyond the worst case scenario. China and Europe are going to kill us in pharma/biomedical innovation for the foreseeable future as a direct result of the last few weeks.
