I don't think districts should be drawn on the basis of race. I say that as a multi-racial person. I also think that they should be drawn to make geographical sense, and should be equally populated within the state.

Inspired by the words of Clark Griswald “If I woke up in the morning with my head sewn to the carpet, I wouldn’t be more surprised than if SCOTUS upheld the Virginia redistricting”. Despite upholding everything in favor of the Pubs in red states.

In regards to Virginia - if we had a unbiased supreme Court could they actually overturn the Virginia supreme Court? Is there an actual legal argument for that?

I’m not sure there is a basis, as the VA court’s decision seems to rest entirely on state law. But perhaps there’s more to it than I’m aware.

The Supreme Court is merely a tool of fascists. A completely unserious institution.
Our entire form of governance is a completely unserious institution. In all sincerity, when was the last time any branch of rhe federal government truly did good things for the American people? It has certainly been more than a decade.

The American experiment is over and it failed under its own weight.

Normally their decision to deny review for this case wouldn’t bother me, as I don't really see any viable grounds for SCOTUS to consider it, but after that same court entertained a challenge to birthright citizenship and created presidential immunity from criminal prosecution out of thin air, let alone entertained that case, in addition to a bunch of other absurd rulings, fuck them.

It is very telling that Republicans are shoving these disenfranchised maps through without a care in the world, and when democratic states hold a vote for the people to speak if they want it, one of our MAGA posters starts this thread crying foul. It would be amusing if not for it being deeply, deeply troubling.
YES!!

If the MAGA crowd wants to know why “extreme” measures were needed in VA (I guess letting voters decide is now considered extreme), this is why!

“… “We cannot see our way clear to requiring Alabamians to cast their votes in the 2026 elections under a districting plan tainted by intentional race-based discrimination,” the panel of three judges wrote in a lengthy ruling. It also warned against causing voters additional confusion by trying to use a new map before the November elections.

The court, the panel wrote, was “painfully aware of the gravity of our ruling.” But, it added, “we do not find the issue particularly complex or close.”“
