I was going to write a longer post about that but got sucked into reading about the epidemiology of meningitis. The meningitis vaccines protect against Neisseria meningitidis, which is a cause of meningitis but not the only one.

S. pneumoniae and H. influenzae are the first and third most common causes and are covered by vaccines which are still recommended. We don’t have a vaccine for Group B strep, which is the second leading cause.

The meningitis vaccines are still recommended for high risk groups- such as communal living situations. However, the softer wording of the new “guidance” will certainly result in some patients not receiving who otherwise should, and therefore unnecessary cases of meningitis, which are fatal about 10% of the time.

I actually had a friend from high school die from meningitis when he was a freshman at UNCW. And anyone who with experience in healthcare knows how quickly those patients get critically ill- so IMO this change is a travesty.

Yea when i was on inpatient in residency, if a patient came in with a week of symptoms, the dark humor would be, “well it’s not meningitis cause they’d already be dead”

For once Leavitt is not entirely wrong. But when Michelle Obama wanted healthier food in school cafeterias and Bloomberg wanted to end big gulp corn syrup drinks, they were nannystaters. It would be great to get Americans to eat healthier food in healthier portions. All for it. But will MAGA suddenly get behind this?

MAGAs will continue to drag their pudgy bodies into the local Dollar General to buy as much cheap junk food as they can afford. Even Dear Leader and MAHA isn't going to stop that.

Sadly it's not just pudgy MAGA's who rely on Dollar General for their food, it's basically poor rural and small town folks everywhere...

Their economic policies sure won't stop it either.
