RIP Ace Frehley

One of my best friends in kindergarten and 1st grade (late 70s) was a HUGE KISS fan. I definitely enjoyed some of their music in my later years. RIP

One of the old farts in another forum I post in mentioned that Jimmy Page could've learned a few things from Ace Frehley, to which I replied:

Didn't ever really care much for KISS but they weren't awful. Catchy pop metal and a decent gimmick with the face paint. Ace Frehley is closer to Ted Nugent than Jimmy Page. I'm sure if Frehley or Nugent sat down in your living room with an acoustic guitar they'd blow your mind, but neither one of them is on the same planet as Jimmy Page. I used to wear this song out in college, I didn't even know it was a KISS song when I first heard it. Great cover, far better than the original...

I have nothing to say about the Jimmy Page part. Ace had his limitations (as did Jimmy), but that cover is definitely not far better than the original. In fact, it almost seems like a tribute. It is very in line with the original (including the solo). They did kick up the tempo some. I do like they don't do the forever ending to the song.

He was flat broke despite being a founding member of one of the most commercially succesful bands of all time. Still a legend but wow did he make some bad decisions.

Early on, Ace was a pretty good guitarist. But the more drugs he took, the worse he got on the instrument. There was a central reason Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley kicked Ace out of the band. He couldn't stay sober and he couldn't play his instrument anymore.

Sure it's a tribute. I'm sure the Mats were raised on KISS and other 70's heavy metal. But the song needed the tempo kicked up (check) and the forever ending is simply awful. I guess you don't have to subject yourself to the torture of listening to that part (which is almost half the song in the KISS version) but even so, the Mats version is way better. All honor to KISS for coming up with the blueprint, but sometimes covers are just better than the original. Just ask Dylan what he thought of Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower ("it was way better")...

Still gonna disagree. I get it. I heard their version first. You heard the Replacements version first. You're not a fan of one. You are a fan of the other. I declare you biased. FTR, my point was the two are too similar for it to be clearly superior to a neutral listener. IMHO, they did not make it their own. We'll just have to disagree. You are still in my top 1000 posters. (Bet you can't say the same.) FTR, EyeballKid fell out of that list. ;)

Until your post I had no idea this song was a KISS cover.

Whatever happened to all this season's losers of the year?
Every time I got to thinking, where'd they disappear?
Then I woke up, Mom and Dad are rollin' on the couch
Rollin' numbers, rock and rollin', got my KISS records out
