RIP Coach Randy Weil

Oh...no

He was the coach when I was a JV manager. Great guy...he was always so kind to me.

Will have to process this. I was a freshman JV manager...Coach Wiel was so excited when he learned I was from Costa Rica. He had a bought a horse down here and loved to practice his Spanish (he was a true polyglot...spoke English, Dutch, Papiamentou (his native tongue from Curacao), Spanish and a touch of French). At the end of the year at the basketball banquet, he named each of us JV managers. When it came to my turn, he named me and said He's special...he's from Costa Rica in the proper Spanish accent. The MC (Woody Durham) made Pat Sullivan say Costa Rica with his Jersey accent to highlight the contrast and get a laugh from the crowd.

Many, many years later after I had been coaching for some time, I spent some time with him at Carolina Basketball camp. Had a chance to thank him for the experience as a JV manager and all I had learned from him. His response was basically to pay it forward. After I was named national team coach he would pass along likes and encouraging comments.

Wow, I had no idea about your coaching. And thanks for sharing your experience with Coach Weil (also, is it actually spelled Wiel)?

Its actually Wiel.

Have been coaching pro basketball as a hobby for more than 20 years. That eventually led me to become the Head Coach for the CR National team about 4 years ago. Back on the IC Basketball premium board I had a thread I updated yearly with how things were going. Since this is more of a politics/random items board...issue hadn't really come up aside from an occasional comment on the Random thread.

I really am heartbroken. Coach Wiel is one of the last remaining ties I had to my time to UNC basketball. He was so amused that I had become a coach.

Its actually Wiel. . . ..
But in North Carolina, calling someone a Weil, is actually a compliment in my book.

I can remember my father telling stories about Herman Weil sitting down at some charity BBQ dinner in or around Wayne County, which he had probably paid for everything, where prior to eating the BBQ, Herman Weil would call for a moment of silence, raise his hands, and announce that he had just converted all the pork into beef and everyone should feel free to eat as much as they want.

My life growing up in Wayne County, NC was immeasurably better because the Weil family chose our little squalid corner of North Carolina to live in and raise up.
