RIP Greg Kihn

Maybe you remember "The Breakup Song" from the 80's. He wrote and sang it:

We had broken up for good just an hour before
Uh uh uh, uh uh uh uh uh
Now I'm staring at the bodies as there's dancin' 'cross the floor
Uh uh uh, uh uh uh uh uh
And then the band slowed the tempo and the music gets me down
Uh uh uh, uh uh uh uh uh
It was the same old song with the melancholy sound
Uh uh uh, uh uh uh uh uh

They don't write 'em like that anymore
They just don't write 'em like that anymore...

Yeah…..that song was a reason for immediate popularity of punch buttons on radio stations and tape players and mixed tapes in the late ‘70’s and ‘80’s……the pause key on tape players/receivers was a God Send!

We spent HOURS making mixed tapes…..that song was on NO mixed tape.

Was this?

To be fair, I wasn’t a big fan of either song. But they were both cultural touchstones of that era.

That's the first Greg Kihn song I think of....

I always liked this song. I bought the single. I'm a sucker for upbeat melodies with an incongruous message. Think "Vacation" by the Go-Gos.
