Though a d00kie, Pilkey was an early advocate for beaches and barrier islands. Over the years he studied and wrote on the fallacies and destructive forces of developement. Co-authored The Beaches Are Moving which lays out how beaches are formed and the ways developement, jetties, etc. hinders their replenishment in a manner that anyone can undestand. Read it 40+ years ago and it changed the way I looked at beaches. Everything in it holds up today. Highly recpmmend it.

Sorry to hear that, but he was 90. He lead a good and influential life. He worked hard to make things better, not for himself with trickle down to others, but for everyone. We as a people need more Orrin Pilkeys. He spoke truth to Power at a time when that truth as a direct threat to Power's ability to enrich itself. That's an uncommon ability/trait we need more of.

I have taught Geography courses in the past and always made sure my students were aware of his life’s work.

When the effort to save the Cape Hatteras lighthouse began, Pilkey suggested that the best recourse was to move it to Greenville and turn it into a Bell Tower for ECU.
