This is another of those surreal moments that we shouldn't normalize and let pass us by.

The President of the Unites States of America is issuing (via a social media company that he is an owner of) what to all appearances is an official proclamation with all the weight and power of the US Government behind it and... what?... we all shrug and ignore it and go about our day?

Why is that? Turns out that it's because we as a nation have reached the consensus that our POTUS is a dottering old senile shitposter whose "official proclamations" deserve the same attention as grandma Sally's assertions that the long term care facility attendants are slipping mind control potion into her lime jello.

Stop just for a moment and just let that sink in.

“There is a temptation to describe what happened yesterday as somehow a “new low.” Our somnolent, gibbering, incoherent, deeply corrupt President, surrounded by his fawning toadies, unleashed a torrent of dehumanizing racist bile, disinformation, and threats.

But it’s not a new low. It’s the same old low. A scene we’ve seen repeated so often there is a kind of numbness to it. Outrage did not ensue. This is what I meant when I wrote earlier this week that all the canaries in the coal mine are dead, departed, and bleeding demised. …”

Maybe Thomas and/or Alito have plans to retire before the midterms ?
If Trump's poll numbers keep dropping, both might want to. If the 'pubs lose the Senate, they might have trouble getting a nominee through. There are some serious precedents for stretching the intent of "Advise and consent."

If the Dems take the Senate in 2026, there will not be a Supreme Court appointment for the remaining two years.

I fully expect either Alito or Thomas to retire at the end of this term.

Yeah, that is why I speculate they may retire before the midterms .

At first the idea of Cruz on the Supreme Court made me throw up a little in my mouth, but then it dawned on me, how much worse would it actually be? I mean would any votes realistically swing differently in that scenario?

And, he turns 55 this year. He’s not 35-42 years-old.

I suspect Justice Cruz would be an improvement over Justices Thomas, Alito and if current trends hold, Kavanaugh. I don't think Ted Cruz is a MAGA true believer. He's a master panderer. As a Justice, he would be right-wing for sure, but I don't know if he would completely abandon all principles.

But he's not going to get it. Trump knows what he did to Cruz and his wife, and also that Cruz holds grudges (as he does). No way he puts Cruz in a position where he might have power over Trump and his family.

It will be interesting to see what happens now that Leo is on the outs with Trump. That almost certainly means any nomination would be someone Trump knows personally. Bove is perhaps not a bad guess. Cannon too, though not sure Trump would go for a woman. He might just ask Pam Bondi, in which case we'd likely get Lagoa.

I think Gorsuch, Kav, and ACB were appointed in their mid-50s but maybe the Donald could appoint Tiffany ?

Ted Cruz and Mike Lee to replace Alito and Thomas 😜
Kavanaugh was 53; Gorsuch 49; Coney Barrett 48.

Trump will appoint a Trump loyalist; so, Bove is likely.

"...unleashed a torrent of dehumanizing racist bile, disinformation, and threats"
For me that was Donald's formal "coming out" as a racist. Just flat-out said it to the entire world. No way talking that back.
