South Korean President backs down

"President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea said he would lift the emergency declaration of martial law he imposed late Tuesday as soon as he could convene his cabinet, bowing to pressure after the National Assembly passed a resolution demanding it end. By law, Mr. Yoon needs to convene his cabinet to lift martial law.

The announcement by Mr. Yoon early Wednesday in South Korea came about five-and-a-half hours after he declared martial law in an unscheduled televised address, setting off largely peaceful demonstrations in Seoul. Within hours of his declaration, the National Assembly voted to rescind martial law, in a swift rebuke of the president’s response to the political deadlock that has hobbled his tenure."

President Yoon’s speech walking back his martial law order.

President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea delivered the following address on Wednesday morning.

I declared emergency martial law at 11 p.m. last night as an act of national resolve against the anti-state forces that are trying to paralyze the essential functions of the state and disrupt the constitutional order of our liberal democracy.

However, a short time ago, the National Assembly demanded that martial law be lifted, so I withdrew the military forces that had been deployed to carry out martial law. I will lift martial law as soon as we have a quorum in the cabinet. It’s early in the morning, so we don’t have a quorum yet.

But I call on the National Assembly to immediately stop the outrageous behavior that is paralyzing the functioning of the country with impeachments, legislative manipulation and budget manipulation.

Thank you.

Depends on what part of eastern NC you’re looking at. I’m confined to areas closer to Raleigh due to my SO’s job. The prices here are higher than they are further east.
Anything close to Raleigh, in my opinion, can no longer be considered rural...even if there is space. Rural eastern (at least the southern part) NC is Bladen County, Sampson, Duplin, Robeson, etc. Those counties have double wides in lower price ranges.

I have less than fond memories of double wides, having grown up in one in White Lake, NC. Loved the lake, not the paper thin walls and the smell of glue in my bedroom on hot summer days.

All I can say is you are woefully underinformed about the Harris campaign and the Democratic platform if you think "trans rights" was anywhere close to an issue they were pushing as part of the campaign. Trying to use this one random message board as an example of what you think Democratic politicians are campaigning on is laughable - and in any event if you look at the "trans issues" thread here you'll see it's basically all about the right-wing politicians and grifters who post non-stop about it.
Well I saw it and a fair number of more moderate Democratic politicians who were getting pummeled by it saw it too. And they weren't allowed to take a more moderate position without getting eviscerated by the base and losing support from the national party.

That's not just one random message board. That's the head of the DNC for Texas. That's congressmen.

And just to be clear, I don't think that's why she lost but taking these hardline stances on very unpopular issues without giving politicians room to maneuver is hurting Democrats.

How did a thread about South Korean martial law turn into a discussion of trans ads and doublewides?

I get that the martial law is over (it never really started) but there still are interesting points about the dynamics in South Korea that produced this. I suppose nobody here really knows much about South Korea

I mean, that’s a narrow definition of rural but ok. I’d prefer to not live in a double wide. Been there and done that. Will do it again if it means I can get out of Raleigh and have some more space.

South Korea's President has declared martial law, claiming that the main opposition political party is "sympathetic" to North Korea and is working to undermine the government. He stated that the opposition party is practicing clear "anti-state behavior aimed at inciting rebellion" and that they have “paralyzed state affairs and turned the National Assembly into a den of criminals.” The South Korean National Assembly has already voted to block his martial law decree. Democracy is under siege around the world, it seems.

What exactly do you think that article shows about the positions that Dems have taken on certain issues or whether those issues were talked about in campaigns? You will find Dems blaming 1000 different things since the election, and the only thing to be sure of is that most of the people assigning blame to this issue or that issue are likely wrong.

That article includes reference to the exact ad I referenced earlier - the "Kamala is for they/them" add mentions that "Republicans spent more than $200 million on network television advertisements centered on transgender issues this year." It also includes this passage:

"Between the 2020 and 2024 elections, transgender rights have become a political flashpoint in the nation’s culture wars.

Thousands of anti-LGBTQ bills were filed in state legislatures across the country, with many of them targeting transgender Americans specifically, according to tallies by the American Civil Liberties Union.

Corporate America was also pulled into the fray, with American brands like Bud Light facing immense backlash for partnering with trans influencers. And perhaps nothing stoked more conversation than the issue of transgender girls and women competing in girls and women’s sports."

In other words, exactly what I said: all of the attention and campaigning and attempted legislation on this issue is coming from Republicans, not Democrats. Further supported by this passage:

"Harris largely avoided the issue on the trail and in interviews and it was notably absent from this year’s Democratic National Convention.

Asked if she believed that transgender Americans should have access to gender-affirming care in this country, Harris told NBC News’ Hallie Jackson, “That is a decision that doctors will make in terms of what is medically necessary.” Pressed further, she said, “I believe that all people should be treated with dignity and respect, period, and should not be vilified for who they are, and should not be bullied for who they are.”"

In other words, exactly what I said: Democrats weren't talking about this issue at all and Harris very quickly changed the subject whenever asked about it. The idea that there is any clear, public "hardline stance" on this issue from Democrats is laughable.it is a fiction invented by Republicans and echoed by Dems who are now reacting to the loss in November by trying to pivot right.

Modular homes are not trailers/mobile homes...
Did I say they were? If so that was a typo. I guess this makes three things about modular homes I know: they exist; they are called modular; and they are not trailers. I guess I also know they are built modularly. So not 0. Just barely more than zero.

I went back and read your post, I mistook you talking about "manufactured" homes in No Country for Old Men and Dancer in the Dark as modular homes. The only reason I said anything is b/c a friend of mine has a 3 story modular home and we still kinda joke about it, but looking into it, it's not really wrong to call trailers and mobile homes "modular homes," so I was wrong anyway...

You're right, No Country for Old Men was probably a bad call. That might have been a trailer? Been a while. Been even longer for Dancer in the Dark.

Dancer in the Dark is a bit frustrating because it's an incredibly good movie, but a) it's hard to rewatch because its so emotionally devastating and b) I can't find anyone who wants to watch it with me.

That was definitely a trailer. In Eastern NC parlance, a single wide...

What does a redneck divorce and a tornado have in common? Someone always loses a trailer... (I'll show myself out now)...

I feel like this situation is at times too complicated for Americans to even bother to understand while also being a very good example of what our own executive might try during his next term.
Well, in America, we would try to impose Marshall law because our GOP is so dumb.
