Central is the other school in Durham and one with which the relationship is far more friendly. Both school are ruled by the same Board of Governors and subject to the same mandates and edicts that emanate from that body. In recent years UNC and NCCU have played one another in men’s and women’s basketball a combined 11 times (since 2007). Coach Moton and Coaches Williams and Davis are friends. This year the Eagles are led by Greensboro Sophomore Gage Lattimore – 24 ppg, 446% FG and 18 for 29 from Three Point Range (621%). He is also perfect from the line (24 for 24). He is coming off a 38 point performance vs Bluefield in Central’s only win after losses to AppState, Virginia, and NCSU. In the pivot Wilson native Khouri Carvey has managed 16.3 ppg and 9.5 rpg on 477% shooting. After that dynamic duo there is a major drop-off for the Eagles as no one is scoring at more than a 5 ppg clip. Dionte Johnson was picked a second team MEAC preseason all-star but he has yet to produce. Central was picked for a fifth place finish in the league but frankly the introduction of Lattimore and Carvey, in from Seton Hill ← Yes, Seton HILL, not Hall → and Carvey from Morehead State → have stepped to the top of the roster and now lead. Such is the way of the college basketball world. A glance at the Eagles’ roster from last season shows but two players that were on the squad last year.
Frontcourt: Veesaar is motivated and smart, Brown has the best rhythms of the year, and High is on the same beam as Henri.
Wings: Caleb Wilson continues with subpar Physical and Intel but brings huge ‘want-to’ to Roy Williams Court while Jarin Stevenson is Mensa Man. Jonathan Powell as the strongest biorhythms on the team topping out physically and cerebrally. Luka is a dud physically and emotionally but also soars intellectually. Isaiah Denis has very low arcs tonight.
Guards: Another Tar Heel thinker is Kyan Evans at the point while Jaydon Young brings the athleticism to tonight’s game. Derek Dixon is bottomed out unfortunately.
Overall: Central has played two good ACC teams and AppState already so power competition is nothing new for the Eagles. They’ve held up pretty well to that sort of thumping and while they have little chance of winning tonight there could be some good, competitive moments just the same. Ben L. Smith High alum Gage Lattimore is a lanky scorer and Wiltson NC big man Khouri Carvey has held up well against Division I calibre centers.
Carolina is a smart team tonight with Evans, Bogavac, Veesaar, Powell, Brown, and Holbrook each sporting 75 PLUS intel marks. Coach Davis joins them in the Newton/Einstein circle. Physically the most impressive ritmos belong to bench men Powell and Young – both should see good time tonight so they may very well have the opportunity to show out.
Carolina is predicted by the gamblers ‘out there’ to take this one by 35. Rhythms and musings say a bit less with Lattimore showing up hot – let’s say Carolina by 28 as the Tar Heels use the game to experiment with multiple looks. Expect Wilson to have his dunks and some heady play from both Bogavac and Stevenson. Veesaar will play VERY TALL. A solid floor game from Evans ought to be accentuated by some big plays from Powell and Young. James Brown may surprise.
Vamos Heels!!!
