The Irony Thread

I admit I've never fully understood irony. I'm not particularly smart. But I think this picture of a guy on a yak, looking at a Yak, is irony. Couldn't link the full photo so had to link my phone photo. I love this photo. Let us discuss irony here. It can be political. It can be just life. Irony is fun. And awful.

I heard that song on the radio a couple days ago. Can't say I really like the song all that much but the gal's got a set of pipes...

True story: Bret Bearup used to post on ACCBoards. He was a fan of that song. I convinced him (not me alone by any stretch; I don't remember who else) that nothing in the song was ironic.

You're both right. Not irony at all. It's what we typically think as irony but really isn't. And, yes, I love Alanis. Great singer.

This is part of the reason I started the thread. Despite having an English PhD, I have never really understood irony. Granted, my specialty was not Restoration literature.

Where's that skeptical Leslie face meme? You're performing. That sentence is ironic and you know it. LOL. Not that it would be a bad thing to have more performativity around here -- not political performativity, but what we might call fun.

And irony is nothing like rain on your wedding day. It's just bad luck. Irony is that one of the best places on Earth to exploit workers is China, a communist country.

Was that sentence of mine ironic? I guess it was. Lol. Honestly hadn't thought about it.

And I don't perform. I'm the genuine. (He laughs aside, like Zack Morris.)

Couldn't agree more. Yes, that's irony. Don't want to get into the socialist weeds (that's my other thread), but yeah, I get it. China is a weird example.

Isn't it ironic that you heard that song then this post came along????

Sort of like rain on your wedding day...

I thought that was part of the fun of that song, that most, if not all, of the things she listed are not really ironic?

I think that's more of a coinidence, which is its own can of worms. I was trying to sing along with it, but the best I could do was a screeching falsetto. Come to think of it (but not ironically (I think)), that's about the best I can do with most songs on the radio...

Random, but I feel like Mendoto Manteo is somehow an album by The Police; somewhere in between Zenyatta Mondatta and Regatta de Blanc.
Haha! Yes, it does sound like a Police album, doesn't it? Lol.

If I'm not mistaken, Sting in to tantra. So think of those long miles over the fields of barley. The fields of gold. Stretched out. Inhaling. Exhaling.

Thank you, sring. You bringing the funk! I like how that incorporated Ms. Alanis. Somehow it all comes back to her. Is that irony?

Anyhow, I'm bout to cook soon. Grooving to Fields of Gold by Sting.

Irony is very weird. You understand it when you see it. But difficult to describe.
