Trump issues executive order prohibiting pay to play for college athletes

Who among us would not trust the owner of the New Jersey Generals to regulate the best sport in the world?
I read a book "written"by LT . A whole chapter was trump giving him a million up front to go from the Giants to the Generals. Now as I recall eventually some court made LT give it back-but it was real FU Donald when it went down

Is this enforceable?
Not really, but...

There is no enforcement mechanism in the EO. The feds can't fine schools or arrest administrators if they ignore the EO. It also has some phrasing problems where it says should do this or that instead of shall do this or that.

But... The feds do have a lot of levers they can pull to force these Universities to change policy. Too many in my opinion. They could potentially hold back funds to get the Universities to adhere to the EO. Trump noted it in the EO directing Sec of Education among others to determine how to enforce it.

So its not enforceable today but don't be surprised if many of the changes occur before Trump leaves office. Also don't be surprised if the EO dies with a whimper if the Republicans determine its not much of a campaign issue.

When a dem is in the White House.
Yep. If a Democrat gets elected POTUS in 2028 or 2032 then I fully expect Republicans to once again become the biggest defenders of "small government, balanced budgets, and states rights" that you ever saw. And it's all bullshit, of course, because when they're in office they love record deficits, interfering with blue states and threatening to withhold aid, and government overreach. Put simply, Republicans only "believe" in those things when Democrats are in office.

Maybe but I suspect the universities pushing for this are mostly going to be the big money schools in the SEC and Big 10 so they can keep more money for the school and less for the students. Although maybe not. If you've got the money, you want to be able to spend it to beat the schools without money.

Regardless, I think the people that this EO is meant to influence are mostly men who watch college football but don't like to see students making more than them. I would guess that skews republican.

Unnecessary but helpful.

It appears to me this EO simply reinforce what the House settlement provides: A cap on revenue sharing for athletic programs to pay athletes + "genuine, fmv" NIL to be monitored and cleared through a College Sports Commission, i.e. Deloitte. One of the purposes of the settlement is to eliminate direct, third party - pay-to-play - payments. Now, let's she if they can enforce it how widespread cheating will be.

Not helpful in a legal sense. Just general support of the settlement from the Executive Branch. Agree that it is probably aimed at pleasing college sports fans who don't like the current direction of "pay-to-play" college athletics. Some folks will likely think that the President himself stopped big donors from paying athletes by this EO.
