Actually there was a terrible economic depression in the 1890s, much like the Great Depression 40+ years later. It started with a Stock Market Crash - the Panic of 1893 - and lasted for over four years. It helped lead to the birth of one of the few major third parties in US political history - the Populist (or People's) Party, which represented mostly struggling farmers and rural areas in the West, Midwest, and parts of the South. And tariffs have often caused economic disasters in this country - the infamous Hawley-Smoot tariff is considered a cause of the Great Depression of the 30s.

My understanding of the current literature is that, while Smoot-Hawley didn't do anybody any favors and might have made things worse, it wasn't the cause of the Depression. It was much more that the Fed decided to contract the money supply, and oh also we were still on the stupid gold standard.

But you are right about McKinley's administration and the 1890s in general.

I didn't say it was the cause of the Depression, only a cause (there were others), and most of what I have read over the years states that was true.
