I’m not sure where to put this but I found it amusing:

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is bringing the name Bragg back to one of the Army’s largest bases, Fort Liberty, which replaced the namesake of a Confederate general in 2023.

But in a memorandum signed Monday, Hegseth instructed the Army to rename the North Carolina military installation in honor of a different Bragg: Pfc. Roland L. Bragg, a World War II veteran who was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart for extraordinary bravery during the Battle of the Bulge, according to a statement from Pentagon press secretary John Ullyot

Bringing to light? The administration was instructed to do that by Congress. How much more public can you get than federal legislation?
It would be virtually impossible for any one person to have a complete understanding of every federal expenditure. Projects like this one bring things to light that probably 99% of Americans would never know about.

It also brings to light just how loosely our representatives handle taxpayer money.

Europe Vows to Respond to Trump’s Tariffs, but Holds Back on Details

European leaders have said that they will respond firmly to higher levies on steel and aluminum, but they have yet to say what that retaliation will look like.

European leaders vowed on Tuesday to retaliate after President Trump raised tariffs on aluminum and steel to 25 percent, even as they held out hope that they would be able to negotiate a deal with the United States.

European Union officials have argued that Europe and the United States are deeply intertwined and that igniting a trade war would hurt both sides. But they have also been quietly preparing to hit back against possible U.S. tariffs, and have said they are ready to enact countermeasures if no trade solution can be found.

“Unjustified tariffs on the E.U. will not go unanswered — they will trigger firm and proportionate countermeasures,” Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, the European Union’s executive arm, said in a statement. …”

Good, I guess, but Vance has WAY more sway with American Catholics than the Pope does now.
I don’t know about this objectively, but certainly anecdotally. My very banal, rhetorically inoffensive, deeply catholic, maga “in-laws” have a 100% rate of siding with maga over the pope. They hand waved don1.0 brown kid kidnappings, and recently were shocked to learn anyone could’ve thought Musk was doing a seig hiel … “oh, honey, he’s just an awkward man.” Everything between brown kid kidnappings and seig hiels were treated with similar polite deflection. They’re absolutely Good Germans, to the T.

I know very little about the law, but is it the assumption moving forward that the Trump administration will appeal these rulings to SCOTUS, where we then face the following possibilities?

1) SCOTUS kneecaps the judiciary and Trump wins;

2) SCOTUS retains a shred of legitimacy; Trump backs down;

3) SCOTUS retains a shred of legitimacy; Trump still doesn't back down

I understand how you feel. Sounds exactly like my family. At least you married into it. I was born into that awfulness. Shameful and depressing for me.

I'm expecting 1 or 3 and lean toward 1.

So now that you know FEMA was ordered by Congress, through the very public legislative process, to spend those funds, you still think it's essential that DOGE be "bringing it to light"? Do you also think the president should defy Congress's direction on this expenditure?

Halt on Trump administration’s cuts to NIH research payments expanded nationwide

The agency wants to impose a 15% cap on NIH support for indirect costs

“A federal judge in Boston ordered a nationwide temporary pause on plans by the National Institutes of Health to substantially slash research overhead payments to universities, medical centers, and other grant recipients.

Judge Angel Kelley of the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts issued the temporary restraining order late Monday night in response to a lawsuit filed that afternoon by associations representing the nation’s medical, pharmacy, and public health schools, as well as Boston and New York-area hospitals.

In the order, Kelley wrote that the defendants cannot take “any steps to implement, apply, or enforce the [policy] … in any form with respect to institutions nationwide until further order is issued by this Court.”

The pause, which is to remain in place until otherwise ordered by the court, comes after Kelley granted another temporary restraining order earlier Monday in response to a lawsuit filed by attorneys general from 22 states. That pause only applied to those specific states, meaning that the NIH policy change was still in effect in the rest of the country. …”
