Yep. The number of Americans who are only happy when millions of their fellow citizens are being made miserable is appalling, but it's also the reality we're all living with. The whole DOGE effort had nothing to do with saving the government money, it was a giant payback/vindictive scheme to go after groups of people that MAGAs hate - government bureaucrats, experts in any field, medical and scientific professionals, people with college and especially graduate degrees, and so on. And the same is true with attacking universities and public ed. The goal is to try and make those "elites" just as miserable and struggling as they are. They don't want to lift the country up, they just want to drag liberal "elites" down to where they are so we can all be miserable and hateful together.
It's like a woman who was interviewed in a 2017 article after Trump's first election said. She lived in a small Florida town whose economy was based around a local federal prison that employed a good many of the town's residents. Under Trump the prison was closed, and the lady (a Trump voter) complained to a reporter that Trump "wasn't hurting the right people." And that's still their attitude nearly a decade later - Dear Leader is their revenge on liberals for electing a black man president and getting gay marriage approved and all the rest.
