Look-In: Don’t remember much about last year’s U of L squad. No big deal at all since this is a complete “Re-Do” with all new players and coach. The Admins at Louisville turned last year’s basketball program out to pasture and brought in a new stable. Subsequently, the Cardinals are 8-5 and no longer an embarassment. Rolling in from The College of Charleston Coach Pat Kelsey went immediately on the hunt, pulling in players from CoC, BYU, Colorado, JMU, Wisconsin, Georgia, and Long Beach State to create a team that shoots ALOT of Threes, rebounds on the offensive boards with vigor, and plays gambling defense. They’ve beaten Indiana and West Virginia for Quad One wins. Up front they may start 6-11 Sophomore James Scott (6 ppg, 6 rpg) along with 6-11 6th year man Noah Waterman (#93, 8 ppg, 4 rpg). J’vonne Hadley may be on the wing (#1 6-6, 10 ppg) and in the backcourt the mainstays are #5 Terrence Edwards (6-6, 15 ppg, JMU) and #24 BallHawking playmaker #24 Chucky Hepburn (6-3 15 ppg, 5 apg, 8th in the nation in steals). Super-Sub Australian Reyne Smith (6-2, 13 ppg, 35% from Three) plays starter minutes. A couple of wild cards are #13 6-10 Nigerian by way of Georgia Frank Anselem-Ibe and #25 6-5 Cote D’Ivoirian Aboubacar Traore (back from a broken arm). Points tend to come from the backcourt trio of Hepburn, Edwards, and Smith. I wrote that the Cards shot ALOT of Threes…but they do not tend to HIT alot of them, shooting 29.9% (opponents tend to hit on a 36.6% clip). Warning here: The Louisville Cardinals have elevated biorhythms today, especially Terrence Edwards, Reyne Smith, and Aboubacar Traore.
Frontcourt: Washington is athletic. So is Claude. Lubin has the ‘want-to’ and Brown has little to offer. Withers has solid presence of mind.
Wings: Powell is down, Tyson joins him in the depths. Jackson is a Wise Man with fire and intellect.
Guards: Cadeau is in that wisdom lane today with positive energy while R.J. Davis is physically raised up. Seth Trimble is a mystery but if he plays he is highly motivated.
Overall: No hiding it…the Tar Heels have poor biorhythms for today while there are Cardinals with good-looking arcs. The Yum! Center should be devoid of students and thus perhaps less of a partisan atmosphere – so there’s a plus. Carolina frontcourt men must out-play their contemporaries from Louisville. Washington appears poised to do so and help from Claude looks possible. Lubin is a hard-worker and looks to do just that today while Withers just might be a clever man this early evening. Guard play must match up to the troika of Hepburn, Edwards, and Smith. Beware of Smith going OFF from the perimeter – he’s got the chops for it. Sloppy passes will be plucked away by Hepburn for run-outs. If the inside Tar Heels can neutralize and even take the upper hand then Davis and Jackson must out-duel the Louisville guards. Seth Trimble, hale and hearty, could be a boon today and throw things to Carolina. Las Vegas did their own prognostication and in the New Year’s Eve hours changed a UNC edge of 1.5 to a Louisville one of the same, i.e., 1.5. Biorhythms cannot see through to a Tar Heel win. A caveat of hope however is the “Never Give Up” spirit that this team has shown. Indeed, the emotion arcs for Carolina are quite raised up – tap into that and these young men can steal a win in a tough conference contest. Watch for The Fire.
