It'll be interesting to see how SCOTUS handles this one. Do they want to stay the injunction and therefore be responsible for SNAP recipients not getting anything?
I'm not sure there's any way this can get to a SCOTUS ruling staying the order over the weekend. But even if it does...Dems can still hammer "even if they don't have to they clearly can and they are simply choosing not to."

This is where I'm honestly not sure how this SCOTUS has been applying their review powers. I know they've been staying district court orders without requiring a court of appeals decision. I don't know if they've been requiring a motion to stay in the district court first. But I'm fairly confident that if they wanted, they would be willing to weigh in immediately, regardless of whether the district court takes any further action.

That said, I agree with you on the messaging. Whatever happens, this puts the administration in a bind. And it's entirely of their own making.

I'm so desensitized to Republican ratfuckery anymore that it's difficult to feel sufficiently outraged, but as someone who grew up with SNAP, this whole ordeal with the GOP playing chicken with SNAP funding is intensely infuriating. It's been maddening hearing right wingers talking about how people on food stamps are lazy, need to get a job, are content mooching off of the government, shouldn't be able to buy cookies, etc. I can't believe that anyone believes that people on SNAP are living high on some proverbial hog. Man, if I had a damn nickel for every Hamburger Helper or Rice-a-Roni meal I had to eat growing up, I could probably retire in my mid-30's.

Congrats to the Trump admin on completely backing themselves into a corner, claiming Dems were going to cut off SNAP and now a judge says the admin has to keep paying SNAP benefits. What are they gonna do, tell people they're defying a court order requiring SNAP payments and try to blame it on Dems? Anyone still want to make the argument that Trump is winning the shutdown?
Trump doing something illegal? No way!

I actually prefer when right-wingers are honest about these things and admit that they don't care about people other than themselves and think that people who get food stamps are lazy good-for-nothings who must have done something wrong to be in the position of needing food stamps. That's despicable but at least it's honest. What I find far more infuriating is when they try to pretend like they are somehow on the side of the those people. Like Josh Hawley, who voted in favor of the BBB then wrote an editorial arguing that Republicans should restore the Obamacare subsidies he had literally just voted to end. And recently he wrote an editorial in the NYT claiming we have a duty to help hungry people and restore SBAP benefits (he proposed some sort of bill to fund them during the shutdown). He's completely full of shit - he doesn't care a bit about poor people and whether they starve or die from preventable and curable health issues. Just pretending to be some champion of the poor in a cynical play for votes, when everything he actually votes for and supports just drives poor people further down into the depths.

“… The emergency funds alone are enough to provide only partial benefits, according to federal officials, raising the odds of another financial cliff for millions of low-income Americans unless Congress can quickly devise an end to the current stalemate.

The twin court defeats nonetheless amounted to a major rebuke of the White House. For days, Mr. Trump’s leading deputies had maintained that they could do little to save the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP, despite the fact that they had access to emergency reserves — and had already moved around billions of dollars to sustain other functions of government while federal funding had lapsed.

… The SNAP benefits, which average around $187 a month per recipient, cost the federal government about $8 billion to provision [sic] each month, which lawmakers must regularly replenish as part of their yearly work to fund the government. But the program also maintains a reserve in case of emergencies or shortfalls, which many Democrats and Republicans had encouraged the Trump administration to tap during the current shutdown….”

I’ve said it on here before but these same people have zero issue with tax breaks for the rich and large corporations. They can get all the assistance in the world but fuck the poor.

There is no end to the suffering they will endure to make the rich a little richer.

Social Darwinism is alive and well in today's GOP.
