Look-In: Defense played tough. That’s Bruin Coach Mick Cronin’s style. Honed at Cincinnati, his Alma Mater, Cronin’s teams are in your face. They give up 64 ppg and their opponents shoot 39% from the field with 29% from three. They rebound as a team. Tyler Bilodeau at 6-9 plays a mobile inside-outside game (14 ppg, 5.5 rpg) and he’s joined by tall and long wings in 6-8 Eric Dailey (12 ppg, 5 rpg) and 6-6 Kobe Johnson (8 ppg, 5 rpg, 4 apg). Hardnosed journeyman Skyy Clark (6-3, 6 ppg) combines with Johnson to swipe passes and disrupt on the perimeter. Dominick Harris has a good record from deep as does 6-7 Serbian Lazar Stefanovic. Gigante slight Spaniard Aday Mara (7-3) swats (1.1), scores (5.5), and rebounds (4) in limited time. Rookie Trent Perry has shown good range as well. Sebastian Mack, a 6-3 scorer (9 ppg) does the dirty work. Good team. Rough out.
Frontcourt: Lubin has the X-Factor, Washington is down, Claude is brainy, and rookie Brown has it all. Withers has the athleticism in spots.
Wings: Physicality flies for Powell, Jackson, AND Tyson.
Guards: For Cadeau The Body is willing and for Davis The Mind joins The Spirit in The Heights. A Strong Will infuses Trimble.
Overall: UNC scores at 86.5 per game. UCLA gives up but 56.8. Something’s gotta give this afternoon. Strong Intel marks for the Heels bode well as does topped out Wing athleticism. This one is going to be about combinations. Smother R.J. Will be order #1 and bog down the pace with bodies, arms, and feet will be order #2.
Matching Bilodeau will be important and making him work on defense will be key. Lubin’s task there. Other Bigs could help - with Withers most likely but a tight rein must be kept there. Could Claude surprise? Could Brown. It is an awful big stage. UNC looks calm. UCLA, agitated. Carolina’s Old Guards should be clever - even wise today. Coach Davis among ‘em.
Snowy New York City also welcomes home Captain Jack. He ought to return that salute today. And a young man outta North Chatham should also make an impression. MONroe’s native son also has a great deal of potential to make Union County proud. This one is about backs to the wall for Carolina — The Xs and the Os, the arcs and the marks all point to a Carolina victory going away. Make it 10. Las Vegas swings the other way (UCLA by 1.5).
