UNC Basketball Possible coaches - UNC hires ex-Nuggets HC Michael Malone

I don't even remember seeing his name on any of the IC scoops. Wow. So out of left field.
He was in the "other names" section of the coaching board from the beginning. But yeah, not a peep about actual negotiations/discussions with him. It will be interesting to get the postmortem from IC. They definitely were not as sourced on the details as one would ordinarily expect (not necessarily their fault).

George has taken more than a few swipes at Malone over the years, particularly after Malone was fired and subsequently said he agreed with the voters that SGA deserved the 2025 MVP over Jokic.

So far, Karl’s Twitter feed is silent. But he will almost certainly offer his take at some point soon since it involves the intersection of the Nuggets and Tar Heels.
Funny how so many UNC alums have coached the Nuggets: Larry Brown, Doug Moe, George Karl.

I realize this is not an apples to apples comparison to Belichick, but after watching how that played out I’m very skeptical of hiring a coach with no experience running a modern college program. Really wish we would have gone hard after any number of up and comers already coaching at the college level after Lloyd and May turned us down.

I actually think i feel better about Malone than I would have about Donovan, weirdly enough. I guess we’ll see.

So out of curiosity, for somebody who was 100% certain it was time to move on, are you happy now? I don't mean that in an accusing/ bitchy way... I'm grasping at straws to decide myself whether I'm happy. I'm not unhappy now... but don't even know how to start deciding whether this was a good move or not.

My thoughts as well. I would like to know if they even talked to Byington and McCollum.

So we hire a guy who:

-is out of work
-has roughly a .400 career win percentage without Jokic
-hasn't coached in college since 2001, as an assistant
-has never navigated the transfer portal and NIL
-was known for not getting along with younger/non-star players
-doesn't have a staff

Terrence Ross Wow GIF
Outside of the Nuggets, he coached the Kings. The Kings. Of course he had a lousy win %. Most people in the NBA consider the Kings to have fucked up in a major way by firing him.

Malone was also a defensive coordinator (unofficial title) in the NBA for years.

Well, I’ll just say it.

My feeling about this hire is kinda the same as five years ago when they announced Hubert Davis would be the head coach. I was disappointed. But I got on board and hung in there with a positive attitude for about three years after which I had seen enough to believe my initial reaction to hiring Hubert was probably correct.

I will get on board and give Malone a few years to show I was wrong to feel disappointed in the hire. I hope I’m wrong. On the positive side he has a ton more coaching experience than Hubert did when he was hired, however he has only seven years as a college assistant. But he has a strong NBA coaching resume, and his father was the head coach at Rhodes Island in the 80s, so he’s been around the college game since he was a kid.

I will see how things go before deciding the hire is a failure. However this goes, I believe moving on from Hubert was the right thing to do.

“… Malone isn’t coming in as a project. He’s already proven. During his time with the Denver Nuggets, he built a contender from the ground up and led the franchise to its first NBA title in 2023.

That alone changes how this hire should be viewed. UNC isn’t hoping he figures it out. They’re betting on someone who already has.

He also became the winningest coach in Nuggets history and earned multiple All-Star Game coaching nods along the way. Players respected him. Front offices trusted him. And his teams consistently had an identity….”
