Oh yeah, for sure, and really those folks are what I mean by it being an internal institutional problem versus there being legitimate outside entities that are successfully keeping UNC football down. There is truth to this, but there are also plenty of Professor Jay Smith’s out there who want to keep UNC football down. And there are also BoG members who have sports loyalties that blind them when it comes to good administration. Those people are a problem too - especially when it comes to conference realignment.
I'm definitely not without bias and I recognize that 100%. I was a Butch Davis guy and I am still incredibly irritated at the how the University handled the whole fiasco in 2010. I know it's been 15 years and I know I should get over it, but that was the point in time at which I was in the program, and it was such a chaotic shitshow, and so many folks's lives got turned upside down because the University didn't have the testicular fortitude to stand behind its employees and its student-athletes. People can feel that Coach Davis wasn't living up to his potential (I disagree, of course) and that he should have had better control of John Blake (with which I agree wholeheartedly)- but the way that the University just completely surrendered to the NCAA without it really even firing a shot (or even having the ability to fire a shot) has always stuck with me.
I wasn't fond of the Mack Brown 2.0 hire because I thought that we were getting a guy who had long ago lost his fastball who was selfishly trying to revive his own career and legacy. And I'm not fond of the Belichick hire for many of the same reasons, among others. I think that UNC would be much better served by pouring this kind of investment into the program but with someone younger and fierier, like Glenn Schumann. I know he doesn't have 6 Super Bowl trophies or anything, but he's spent his entire career so far around Nick Saban and Kirby Smart, and has actually coached and recruited in college football. THAT's the kind of hire I want to see UNC make. I want us to stop our obsession trying to win the damn press conference or SportsCenter like we did with Mack and Belichick, and instead try to hire the *next* Mack Brown or Bill Belichick- and actually invest in him.
