Sounds like Chancellor Roberts should try and get prof Porter to come over to UNC and work in the new School of White Power-he can send him around to spy

I read the linked article. I also looked up the locations mentioned in the article.

I know little about Israel or the West Bank geographically aside from general basics (relative locations of Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Golan Heights, West Bank, Gaza, Dead SeaRed Sea, Lebanese, Syrian, Jordanian and Egyptian borders).

First, a general information question. How common is it for UNC to pay for an overseas trip for a class?

One observation - based on my reading, which is limited, about the locations visited, the class appears to have spent relatively little time with Muslims. They definitely appear to have spent relatively little time in majority Muslim areas.

The course instructor said, “….the travel component of the course was necessary because he didn’t want students to theorize about the conflict without seeing it firsthand.”

I’d argue that in 7 days they didn’t see the conflict firsthand. What they did was akin to going on a wildlife safari in Kenya and thinking you’re well-versed in African wildlife and environmental issues.

They certainly didn’t visit Gaza (understandable, it’s a war zone). Did they visit any Palestinian refugee camps?

I wasn’t expecting much from this “article” based on its title and the bio of its author - “A Morning at SCiLL: School of Civic Life and Leadership students are practicing what higher education reformers preach” by Jenna Robinson.

Early in her opinion piece, she writes, “As I entered the class, I wondered whether in this age of self-censorship and cancel culture, students would be willing to speak up on such a controversial topic.”

Cancel culture. That’s one letter in MAGAt/right-wing bingo.

Her piece was full of self-congratulatory pablum praising SCiLL.

As a class of '74 UNC undergrad, I enjoyed being challenged and questioned about my opinions and beliefs. The profs were provocative and the back and forth with students made being in the classroom worthwhile.

But today is much different than 50 years ago. Today, there is a need for students to have a safe space where their opinions and beliefs are not challenged and questioned.

The SCiLL provides a safe space to meet that need and enable UNC to be more inclusive... not to be confused with the "I" in DEI

An interesting 'take' on changing times.

"UNC System President Peter Hans just announced that the system is "exploring the idea" of creating a new accrediting agency with several other major public university systems. Hans did not specify which systems were in talks, saying he will have more details soon.

The announcement comes a few weeks after President Trump signed an executive order that will make it easier for states to switch accreditors.

"There's been a lot of discussion in recent years on the national level about reforming the accreditation system for higher education. There are frustrations with the cumbersome, expensive, time-consuming burden the current approach places on our campuses, especially smaller institutions that must dedicate significant resources to the process," Hans said at a committee meeting for the UNC Board of Governors.

Pointing to the conversation at the national level, Hans said the system has an opportunity to "help restore" accreditation to its "original, focused" mission of ensuring colleges are providing a quality education."

Let's scratch some names on paper, hmmmmm, let's see:

Texas A&M
Alabama
LSU
Arkansas
Florida
SC
UT
Ole Miss
UGA

We could call it the Southeastern Eduction Commission!

And will likely be considered a joke by everyone outside this group. Contrary to what they may believe, Trumpers can't just create something like what they're planning and automatically have it accepted by everyone else. And no doubt their educational "standards" will likely be well outside what mainstream accrediting agencies historically require, and not in a good way.

It doesn’t have to be accepted by “everyone else”, it just has to be accepted by Republicans and, at their lead, by the federal government.

The issue here is that universities must be accredited to be able to receive federal student aid and that the accreditation bodies seek “woke” policies as part of accreditation.

Create a Republican-friendly accreditation body that the federal government deems legitimate and you’ve removed a significant barrier to Republicans being able to take over the university/college system with enforced retrograde curriculum/policies.
