He came to Carolina in the days when we would get a scholar from Columbia instead of losing one to that sort of place.

I was lucky enough to be around him a good deal though I never had a class with him. Stopped by his office hours and talked a couple of times about FDR in particular. He was a priceless gem.

Similar to me. I was around him a few times but never had a class with him. RIP.

Sorry for your loss.

I’m guessing you’ve visited the FDR home/museum/library in Hyde Park, NY. It’s outstanding.

I stopped there on a road trip a couple years back, mostly because it was on the way. I got a lot more out of it and spent a whole lot more time there than expected. I got lost reading all his encased original correspondence with Churchill, Stalin, Einstein, and others. It was engrossing reading their exchanges from before, during, and after the war. One of the most incredible second-hand historical experiences I can imagine.

I didn’t realize he just published another book. I’m ordering it as soon as I post this.

RIP!

Very much want and need to make that junket. Maybe this summer! My wife and I need to get out and about in the Empire State a good bit more.

  • Taking in a football game at Army on a sunny day when the leaves are changing is an excellent trip.
  • Hiking along the Hudson in Bear Mountain and Harriman State Parks and the Hudson Highlands is great. From where you live, you’d be parking your car in 60 minutes or so.
  • The Mohonk Preserve is west of New Paltz….about 90 minutes away. It encompasses the Shawangunk Mountains; pronounced Shawngum by some; called The Gunks by most
  • Lots of spectacular scenery within a short drive of Manhattan.

Need to go to New Paltz and Woodstock for a long weekend as I have old friends in both towns (who are themselves friends).

We also have friends in Ithaca and love going up there for a weekend to hang out with them (they are former Chapel Hillians AND Ashevillians too -- and old time musicians).

Also love going to Sleepy Hollow for a day-trip and check out one of the most amazing graveyards anywhere around anywhere.

New York countryside culture is a gas...very different and yet familiar.

We did the Bear Mountain thing...need to go again.
