I seldom drank water as a kid yet played in sweltering Piedmont NC summer weather, hooping in the hot sun as well as baling hay in August wearing long sleeves to shield the scratch up.

I still tend to eschew water in the main.

But my students and daughter and her friends (late teens) can't go anywhere without a 'water bottle.'

What happened and how did I miss it, whatever it was?

I've always drunk a lot of water. I doubt there's been many nights in my adult life that I didn't have water by the bed for me to sip on through the night.

When I was working, during the summer I'd freeze two Gatorade bottles of water and use them to keep two Gatorades cold. By the time I fished the first Gatorade, the top bottle of water had melted enough that I could switch to that. I'd keep topping it up from tap water until the ice all melted. I'd drink the other Gatorade for lunch and do the same with the other ice for the rest of the day. I'd end up drinking close to a gallon of fluids, mostly water on a hot day.

I don't drink enough water. I will get 32-48 oz at the gym and will have water at my bedside but I really should drink more of it. Of course if I am working in the heat I'll drink more.

My mom always said I needed to drink more water but she should not have left us with so many other options growing up (especially soda). It's hard to be a regular water drinker when you didn't grow up doing it.

Drinking lots of water has been a thing for a while now.
Several years ago it was said to “drink eight, 8 oz glasses of water everyday.” That was years ago. I believe they (whoever they is) walked that back just a tad… so maybe 1/2 gallon per day isn’t required after all.

Then there was the deal about “don’t drink ice water, room temp is better” yadayada.

Then they say, it doesn’t have to be straight water, but other fluids are ok as long as they aren’t straight sugar water like sodas and such, etc.

Now they’re saying more people are walking around more “dehydrated” than they should be, which is probably true, but I think there is a balance there. If all you drink is coffee, sweet iced tea, sodas and energy drinks and then switch to beer after 5pm every day… I guess you could say you’re getting “plenty of fluids” but probably not the “best kind”.

I always carry a water bottle. If I happen to forget it then as soon as I notice, my mouth is immediately very parched.

I've occasionally thought about this. Don't remember ever drinking water until at least college age

I know I must've but when and where, no idea

I can pinpoint when I noticed the water bottles everywhere thing...I visited both U of Colorado and Colorado State campuses in 2000. Everybody there was totin' one around with them. I chalked it up to altitude or something along those lines. Very soon afterward the practice had become common in North Carolina.

About a year ago ii got an app that monitors water usage and steps. The goal is 60 ounces a day and 8000 steps. I hit both almost every day..A Year later I don't feel any different and I weigh the same.

I drink nothing but water and black coffee. Sugary drinks are one of the worst things one can legally consume. Zero nutritional value in any of those.
I like a little sugar in the three cups I drink a day and I drink one 16 oz ginger ale a day. Other than that, it's just water for me.

In my 60's and I always keep hot younger wet nurses. Drink straight from the tap. Thinking of weening myself if I reach my 80's. If it's not broken, why fix it?

I misremembered in my first post. A few years back when I was sick, I went 10 weeks when all I could have by mouth was ice chips to moisten it. That was a long 10 weeks.

I’ve actually thought about this before. As a kid, I pretty much only drank water if there were no other options. From being a kid through my early 20s (1970s-1990s), nobody carried water around. And you pretty much only drank water after strenuous physical activity, if you had to take a pill, or if you needed to quench your thirst in the middle of the night. The thought of bottled water seemed almost crazy. Why pay for water?

Then when I went to law school— this was 2001 through 2004– I noticed most people carried water with them and had water sitting in front of them in class. That’s when I first noticed the water craze and wondered when that started.

All that said, I drink water more regularly now, but I still need to drink much more than I do. I used to go for days without drinking pure water. Now I have about 3-4 glasses of water per day.

Never been a soft drink fan for no particular reason. Drink water to refresh myself and with meals. Black cofee. Beer and liquor are a whole other thing.

It’s been several years now if not more. Like you, I consumed way too many sugary drinks growing up. Our parents didn’t know any better.

Drink and eat good stuff because you have to. Only occasionally should we partake in sugary stuff that is bad for us. If one doesn’t give a shit then that’s ok. You’ll reap what you sow.

Fell for diet Coke for 30 years now 64 oz of water is my go-to. Sometimes when I'm hungover or hungry I get the orange toastee cracker and have to get a coke to wash it down. Truth is I grew up with the peanuts in the Pepsi crowd but fucking hate Pepsi!?!

The "water-drinking craze," particularly referring to the significant rise in bottled water consumption, began to take off in the late 1980s and really exploded in popularity during the 1990s with major companies like PepsiCo and Coca-Cola entering the market with brands like Aquafina and Dasani, respectively, heavily marketing the idea of increased hydration through bottled water
