LOL at that article using blanket terminology for Baptist Churches. There is no more ecumenical Christian denomination. If you had a group of 10 Baptist Churches you'd probably have 13 different theologies.

Yes! There's a bit of difference between what Franklin Graham actually practices and what churches like Pullen Memorial Baptist Church in Raleigh and Myers Park Baptist Church actually practice.

Another example is Mt. Olive University, which is associated with the Free Will Baptist denomination. It started as Mt. Olive Junior College. Thanks to the leadership of Burkette Raper, Mt. Olive Junior College (which changed into Mt. Olive College and later Mt. Olive University) firmly resisted all efforts to transform it into a school where its science courses strictly conformed to Biblical stories written by persons with no meaningful understanding or appreciaion of how geological, meteorological, medical, or evolutionary processes actually work.

I grew up believing that religion was not set of principles that describe how the world operates, but a set of principles that can be used to help persons cope with how the world operates. As in, I don't see religion as being particularly useful in analyzing "how" and "why" questions, but very useful in working through the "what now" questions.

Would love to see/have their complete data base. Especially in a form in which I could mess with.

My favorite Baptist joke...

A Baptist is on a boat that shipwrecks on a deserted island and is the only survivor. After a few years, he is located and a rescue ship sent out to get him. When his rescuers arrive, they find the man eating fish for dinner in front of 3 buildings that he'd built out of scavenged wood. As the rescuers are helping him to the rescue ship, one of them asks him what the 3 buildings are for. The man replies, "The one in the middle is my house, the one on the left is my church, and the one on the right is my old church."

What's the difference between the Baptist softball team and the Methodist softball team?

The Baptists change out of their jerseys before going to the bar afterward.

Most every church league softball player I ever knew loved their beer. Not just game days either.

My favorite is “Q: How do you keep the Baptist from drinking all your beer on the fishing trip? A: Invite another Baptist.”
