Zero Sugar soft drinks

I pretty much drink water or alcohol. If I am drinking empty calories, I expect a buzz for my trouble.

I might have a soda once a month, and that is usually a full sugar Cheeerwine. If I don't feel well I will drink a ginger ale, mostly just because I was raised to drink ginger ale when I was sick and now it is a comfort thing.

When it can be found Vanilla Coke Zero is the closes in taste to the Coca Cola taste back in the day. Diet Coke is awful.
I do not like the Vanilla coke, the vanilla just seems overbearing and not subtle like when they added a splash of vanilla to a fountain drink back in the day.

I have several friends that work or have worked at coke.

From talking to them the only reason coke uses HFCS is because it is so much easier to work with.

The Mexican Coke is the best.
 
You guys who are still drinking Coke Zero instead of Cherry Coke Zero are really missing out. (Though I do have Coke Zero from time to time.)
I like the Cherry Coke Zero.

I've really cut back on all soft drinks. I typically drink sparkling water now.
 
Nah, it's a cost/sourcing issue.
Yea, I probably should have said one of the reasons.

From working in manufacturing, I know that some materials cost much more to work with because of their corrosive nature and how the equipment has to be cleaned, repaired, and parts replaced more often.

Good point considering how corn production is pushed.
 
HFCS has a lot of subsidies that makes it pretty cheap in the US (whereas cane sugar is kind of limited).

I believe all of Latin America Coke uses cane sugar.

I agree. But also, particularly in Mexican Coke, the contract that Mexican Coke has with the Coca-Cola Company does not allow the Coca-Cola Company to "force" Mexican Coke to used HFCS instead of sugar. Maybe the same for other Latin America Coke companies. I always liked the idea that Mexican Coke told the Coke-Cola Company to FU and FO when the Coca-Cola company insisted they switch to HFCS.
 
I don't believe that's quite accurate. Ive actually seen the contracts between bottlers and Coca-Cola. The power is all on the side of Coke. However, Coke allows bottlers to use whichever approved sweetener they want (gives them wiggle room for cost).

I was just looking up some Mexican Coke stuff and apparently there are some Mexican bottlers that do use HFCS. There was a time when the Mexican government banned the use of HFCS in soft drinks to protect its sugar industry; the issue made it to the WTO and Mexico lost, which allowed Mexican bottlers to source as they saw fit. One of the most prominent bottlers in the northern area (ARCA Continental) shifted over to HFCS some years ago, while other stuck with sugar. I know in Central America its all cane sugar (pretty sure that applies for all of South America as well). The Mexican Coke exported to the US is still made with cane sugar.
