Thanks to the discussion of Kendrick in the SB thread, I had the idea to create this thread. A thread for us to post songs, creating a "king of the hill"-like atmosphere. I'll post a song, then the next person can post a song that they think is better, and so on. So, fellow heads, here's the current leader (a classic mid):

Who's got next?

I am completely unqualified to play along but look forward to the results as a good source of well regarded songs in the genre. Unless you guys start pulling my leg and post the worst stuff for fringe and giggles.

I am, too, but that still might not stop me.

On the tails of this Drake/Kendrick thing, that I don’t understand, has there been a more overtly violent, yet fairly mainstream, diss track than Hit’em Up?

I haven’t followed much hip hop and rap since mid career Eminem and late Outcast and DMX. My knowledge of the genre is largely informed by the 90s, eg Nas, Snoop (of the “Doggy Dog” era), Dre, Tupac, Biggie, Bone Thugs, WuTang, etc.

Not as violent, but Ether was better, imo.

Thanks. Just gave a listen, definitely a brutal takedown track, and I agree, I think with a few listens I’d prefer it over hit’em up. Mildly surprised I didn’t know the track already, though by 2001 I had mostly moved on from rap, sans a few fairly to fully mainstream albums.

I guess it would depend on how you define mainstream, but a lot of rappers who have made records naming specific names threatening violence, or rapping about specific acts of violence they've committed

Lil Durk is the most mainstream example, currently in prison on a federal rico case for conspiracy/murder for hire. The murder in question was mentioned on a few records iirc, plus countless other references that may or may not have occurred

A different type of rap beef maybe, and that sub-genre does seem to be dying out (no pun intended) thankfully on a mainstream level

I’m probably misunderstanding this thread, wouldn’t be the first time 😀 but hard to believe this hasn’t been posted yet.
