    Off-Topic Movies Thread

Liked them all. The Joel Coen take is bizarre, feels like a filmed stage play in modernist settings, but overall is fine. Did not think Denzel Washington was all he could have been in it, but others were better, and as far as performances, Kathyrn Hunter almost stole the movie as The Witches...

    Off-Topic The return of Rush

These Neil Peart lyrics were from decades ago, and right this moment in 2025 it is absolutely impossible for any lyrics to more perfectly sum up what is wrong in America.

I don't have much, or enough anyway, support from the critics on this, but the 2025 film that has had the most impact on me was probably Sovereign. It's a narrow band focus of the problem, but it still exemplifies, in drama, writing and performance, the special ideological insanity going on in...

Possibly my second best film of this year. I say it's great and that I also say it's not a good adaptation of VIneland; both are true. Adapting Pynchon to film is something like trying to pole vault over Mount Everest. But you could look sensational trying, and Anderson did it here.

    Off-Topic The return of Rush

I will certainly attend some of the live performances, because as I have said many times, overall (meaning skills, performance live, interesting compositions, and meaningful lyrics) Rush represents the finest music I've encountered. But without Neil Peart, my personal opinion is that this group...

Off-Topic How Did Matter Come into Being?

So you were after more than matter. To expand on the something rather than nothing, and on your angle above: When I am confronted by this kind of thing, I always seem to come back to the notion of candidate answers. For a long time it has seemed to be that if you want to ask a useful question...

Off-Topic How Did Matter Come into Being?

Let's start with the fact that the universe we see now has matter, energy, space and time. We experience each in somewhat a separate way, for example eating food, lighting a match, traveling down the highway, and experiencing how each word you are reading in this sentence keeps slipping into...

    Off-Topic Rapture is postponed

Nothing really more aptly sums (heh) up the zero-sum moral nature of Christianity than the notion of God's favs being raptured up out of the mess.

    Off-Topic RIP Robert Redford

Oops, thanks. I also recommend his early career appearance on The Twilight Zone, a show that was usually great TV decades before great TV really emerged as a force. His remarks on it:

Off-Topic Horror movie thread (it’s that time of year)

I'll come back to this thread in the future, as I'm deeply fascinated with why human beings love things like horror films and rollercoasters--it's partly about ancient genetic responses regarding controlling fears, but it's also wrapped in various streams of human culture. To your specific...

    Politics The Charlie Kirk Thread

This event will be used nonstop to increase all the horrors of the Trump Cult and regime, and the focus will be to criminalize all criticism of them. They will use it a hundred times more than they did the attempt on Trump last year. You think things cannot get worse in America, and the Cult...

    Off-Topic RIP Robert Redford

A great person who did great things, firstly, but without question an acting icon, ranking with people like James Cagney and Spencer Tracy, as among the most charismatic male actors in cinema history. Films I will point to because others unfairly forget them, two prison dramas which ask us to...
