    Politics Lambasting Jesse Welles

I don’t think his songs are all great, honestly. And he’s not writing on a level comparable to Dylan or Prine or maybe Todd Snider’s best stuff (or others we could name, as I see it. But I do think Welles is clever and is a sharp observer. The ICE song nails it, in my opinion.

Chicken Wire Gang Boys Band Brothers — super excellent band. And Greg Bell is a major guy.

    The Music Thread

Not sure why 50s music is down the list for some…. I mean, there’s great stuff from other eras. But, dang, the original decade of rock and roll had some incredible stuff. Check Berry, Johnny Burnette, Elvis, Eddie Cochran, Little Richard….some amazing tunes. Maybe the best rock singer ever —

Here you go. I guess it could be about SC, as with their terrific “Chitlin’ Strut.” SCOTS

    Politics Trump 2028

Bannon said same stuff in Greenville, SC earlier this year. Here’s a report on his speech at the GOP convention there. https://www.greenvilleonline.com/story/news/politics/2025/04/15/steve-bannon-speech-to-greenvat-gree-p-speakers-attendees-focus-on-2020s-stolen-election-retribution/83085749007/

    Politics The Charlie Kirk Thread

On the Bulwark, Tim Miller really went off on “illiberal” liberals celebrating Kirk’s death. He was emotional — angry. I don’t feel like I’m seeing very much of that. But he’s maybe in touch with way more activist types than I am. He’s obviously connected; I’m not. I’ve definitely heard and...

    Politics The Charlie Kirk Thread

I agree. But there have been quite a lot of well educated, affluent, professionally successful Republicans who were solidly supportive of Bushes, Reagan, McCain, Romney, etc. and have fallen right in line with Trump — despite the warnings of strong conservatives.

    Politics The Charlie Kirk Thread

For me, it’s not that voters weren’t moved by Harris and other Dems calling Trump authoritarian. It’s that Republican voters — and many swing voters — didn’t care that so many CONSERVATIVES said Trump was a danger to our democracy. Liz and Dick Cheney. I get that lots of folks, including...

    Politics The Charlie Kirk Thread

I’d say it’s tone deaf, except that it seems like they know exactly what they’re doing and why….strategic.

    Politics The Charlie Kirk Thread

And if the narrative about the shooter doesn’t do the trick, it will be — already is, to a degree — the reaction of the left. Some liberals have been ugly in their reaction, in my opinion. Some have expressed conflicted feelings. But, overall, very few have celebrated Kirk’s murder, it seems to...

    Politics The Charlie Kirk Thread

Right-wingers on X today still blaming the left — college professors, Democrats, so on and so forth. Jesse Watters calling Democrats murderers. Stephen Miller pointing to the reaction of some to Kirk’s tragic death and saying there is a terrorist movement on the left. They aren’t letting go...

    Politics The Charlie Kirk Thread

I think it’s too soon to really understand the character and the motivations of the suspect. But based on what I’m seeing on X, the right-wing crowd is absolutely not giving up on the narrative of generally blaming left (maybe radicalized at college….the message in bullet casings echo Dem...

Off-Topic Second (or third) worst president of all time: This Date in History

Jerry Richardson and his partner, Charlie Bradshaw, got involved with Hardee’s very early and launched Spartan Foods, here in Spartanburg. They owned a whole bunch of the fast food restaurants and then Quincy’s steakhouses. Richardson, of course, went on to bring the NFL to the Carolinas. He...
