“… By March 2020, he was still using the word “gay” as a punch line: “This was the gayest (not in the fun dick sucking way) thing I’ve ever seen. This dude is literally everything I hate all rolled into one.”

And in June 2021, Platner posted about military “pranks,” writing, “I like how our gay antics make him so uncomfortable he hates us. I’m doubling down on gay chicken next time in honor of this Air Force pussy.”

… Platner told The Advocate that he no longer uses the slurs or dismissive language that appeared frequently in the posts. “These were words that I used for a long time in ways that I did not take seriously,” he said.

“Because of personal relationships that I’ve developed over the years, I do not use [them] now and find [them] to be quite offensive. I stopped using that specific kind of language a while ago … and today I find that stuff abhorrent. And I am sorry that I ever used it.”…”

Basically, he’s saying, yeah, that was me, then I grew up when I turned 40 or so.
Yeah, but is growing up and maturing and changing as an adult really a good excuse ?

I ran for Congress in 2006. I was a very minor candidate so no one dug into my past. But if they did and came up with embarrassing styuff I said in high school and college, I would still be doomed to wear the hair shirt😱

Trump is POTUS.

Who should the Democrats run against?
Democrats should be shifting their message. Hang every messed up thing he does around the Republican neck. Tariffs, blame the Republicans. Argentina bailout, blame Republicans. Government shutdown, blame the Republicans. Tearing the Whitehouse down, blame the Republicans. Or at least ask where the Republicans are at? This is a golden opportunity to damage the Republican brand.

How old do we have to be to lose the excuse of youthful indiscretion and/or the arrogance of youth? OTOH, should there be a Logan’s Run limit on when a person can turn over a new leaf?

Eventually, all our leaders will be Millennials or younger and a lot of them are gonna have some ‘splaining to do. We are going to have to figure it out. I wonder if younger voters find this guy more relatable and authentic than an accomplished but 77-year-old governor?

And where the hell is Gen X? We continue to be slackers.

On the other side of things, I think many of us need to be less rigid about what we think should be offensive to an extent that we call into question one’s character, and realize even grown, mature, well-meaning people make off-color jokes/comments that are not at all intended to be hateful or malicious. I’m speaking in general terms there and not as it relates to any specific individual or instance, but I think some of his comments where he uses the term “gay” likely presents such a scenario.

I agree with this. I was in college (in the 1980s) before I quit using “gay” as a negative descriptor. I genuinely didn’t think about it as about sexual orientation at all, I was thinking of the 1930s dated use of “gay” (this party is so gay), used ironically, and had to learn about the insult has not just harmless teen slang. It was a harder habit to break than I expected.

“… Former Representative Abigail Spanberger, the Democratic nominee for Virginia governor, has not been involved in planning the redistricting effort. She said in August that she had “no plans” to commence a redistricting effort, though the state’s rules do not require the governor’s participation in the constitutional amendment process. Ms. Spanberger, through an aide, declined to comment.

… As in California, redrawing Virginia’s congressional districts mid-decade requires altering the state’s constitution. To do that, majorities in consecutive sessions of the legislature — once this year and again after Jan. 15 when newly-elected delegates are seated — must approve the amendment. Then, it would have to pass a statewide referendum, which could go before voters early next year.

Democrats hold 51 out of 100 seats in Virginia’s House of Delegates and have a 21-19 advantage in the State Senate. Virginia state senators do not face re-election until 2027….”

Even if folks understood you were not intending to imply the use of "gay " as a slur about sexual orientation, we hold you accountable for the cultural appropriation of the word "gay "

Come on Virginia
We need you to vote like you are all north of the river in Richmond

“I have no reason to deny [that the posts are mine],” Platner said in a Zoom interview. “I made a lot of comments over the years and talked a lot of shit on the internet. I have no reason to doubt that at some point I used language that I would not be using today.”

He paused, then added, “It’s indefensible.”

He could get many of the MAGA votes with these views and all of the Dems for not being a MAGA Trump sycophant. Landslide
