2025 In Review; Predictions for 2026

I used to enjoy reading those amusing and snarky Dave Barry "Year In Review" pieces that he always did and which were syndicated nationally. But over the past decade the news (and reality in general) have gotten so bad that I stopped reading them several years ago, because no matter how funny or sarcastic they were about the year's events they can't even begin to describe how awful things actually were, and I didn't find most of what he wrote very funny anymore. Or to put it another way, it's the same thing that many have said about The Onion these days - how can you possibly top in fake headlines or a year-end review of events what is happening in real life?

Outside of a couple of nice sports moments (Spurs win the Europa and Duke wins ACC titles in the two main sports) this year can bite my ass.

It's been up there with 2020 in forgettable years

2020 was bad enough I still have a Durham Bulls t-shirt that was universally agreed to -- "2025 This is Some Bullshirt"

Other years have had worse individual events for me (death of parents for instance still stings), but from a macro perspective 2020 was pretty much dogshit

2025 on paper was a great year for me. And the first few months were fine. These last few months and in particular the last month I have been beaten into the ground at work with a steady stream of horrific shit. Just about every single workday is some new batch of gruesome or tragic or usually both. Wrecked my holiday season and now I go between being an anxious wreck or being completely emotionless. I want a new job where I am home every night but there simply isn’t anything available that would still pay the bills. I have a 5 year plan to “escape” to a more normal job in municipal government but that shit needs to hurry up.

For me personally 2025 wasn't so bad, although I did lose one of my favorite uncles to cancer. But in terms of the national and state political and economic scene? Yeah, this year sucked big time and couldn't end fast enough. And unfortunately in 2026 I think it's just going to get steadily worse under Trump 2.0 - economically, politically, and in other ways. The only possible bright spot is that the midterm elections are next November, which will possibly place a big roadblock into Trump 2.0's plans to turn us into the next Hungary and roll us backwards to the 1950s.
