Great post.I have been to at least one round every year since 1978 or so. For the most part this is true but overstated. People do cheer and say things as the rounds tense up. You the man is frequently heard.
I happen to be one of only a few hundred people who saw every shot jack Nicklaus hit on the back 9 in '86. We picked him up on 10 and followed him all the way around. At the time he was not in contention and The crowd was pretty sparce. obviously it grew to enormous proportions after amen corner. The normal Augusta decorum completely broke down during the charge. Just before he hit the 'yes sir' putt on 17 there was a huge roar behind us on 15. Everyone knew Seve was there and we assumed he stuck it close. In the biggest break of Augusta protocol ever, a guy came running up the side of the fairway yelling 'Seve's in the water, Seve's in the water!!'. The crowd exploded. Jack drained the putt and the volume redoubled again. When they posted the bridie on the scoreboard the panel for hole 18 opened up and the guy running the scoreboard pumped his fist through the opening. Bedlam
It was the most amazing sports moment of my life and I saw Jordan hit the shot against Georgetown, Tiger win his first and last green jacket, Larry Mize chip in to beat Norman and Marvin Williams shot to beat dook a)l in person.
Still have my badge from the day which I keep in my safe.

It's the game one loves to hate.Great post.
I still do not get golf at all. I played one round once.
It's not just the good round/bad round ebb and flow. Even during the worst rounds you still hit that perfectly shaped drive the way your eyes saw it on the ter box, hit that magical approach from the shit that lands 3ft from the pin, and/or sink that 25+ foot double breaking putt that keeps you coming back for more pain and agony. It's the game one loves to hate.
I played for over 50 years before my buddy and I had health issues. I was a 15 handicapper but would sometimes score in the low 80s and then think I had figured the game out only to come out for the next round and couldn't break 90
My all time best was a 77 and I keep that scorecard in my office to this day. After a bad round I would tell my buddy how much I hate golf, and my buddy would respond asking if I was coming back for the next round, and my response was "you know I will"
You are so right ! The golf gods tease you with enough good shots to bring you back for another round of torture. It's not just the good round/bad round ebb and flow. For me, I started in college but REALLY played constantly from my 3yr of law school to about 2 years ago (25ish years) and was down to a 9 when I hurt my shoulder. After that didn't play for a year and a half and when I did my game had gone to shit to the point I stopped scoring bc it ruined my enjoyment of being outside. I DGAF about my score anymore and magically I ended up liking the game bc I wasn't worried about if I would drop a shot, lose a ball, or whatever. If I had to guess, I'm probably back to being a bogey golfer which is fine with me but even if I wasn't... whatever. I also still walk courses bc I find that I play better since I'm not constantly running up on people having to wait for my shot and if people come up on me, I just waive them on and wait bc If I'm paying $100 to play (which is what most courses around me cost anymore), I'm getting my money's worth.
I fully expect the PTB to make Augusta as slick as an iced-up windshield this afternoon and tomorrow. I’m not sure they can keep Rory from running away with it, but they don’t want him at 17 or 18 under going into tomorrow.I’m a big fan of Rory and wouldn’t mind seeing him win back to back, but I kinda want him to struggle a bit today to make for a more interesting Sunday.
Yeah the tough conditions aren’t exactly conducive for someone in the pack to go nuclear and post a ridiculously low score to reel in Rory (I type this right as Scottie almost holes out for eagle and posts -5 on the front 9 lol).I fully expect the PTB to make Augusta as slick as an iced-up windshield this afternoon and tomorrow. I’m not sure they can keep Rory from running away with it, but they don’t want him at 17 or 18 under going into tomorrow.
Interstinlgy enough, neither said that quote! That said it's 100% true! You are so right ! The golf gods tease you with enough good shots to bring you back for another round of torture.
I don't know if it was Mark Twain or Oscar Wilde but I agree : " Golf is a good walk spoiled "
"You have to hit a ball into a gopher hole with a stick"Interstinlgy enough, neither said that quote! That said it's 100% true!
One of my favorite comedy routines is Robin Williams' Origins of Golf or something like that.
