There are no Nazis in Valhalla
altoheel is not wrong that Norse mythology has a place in neo-nazism. I mean, it had a place in Nazism, and proto-Nazism. Wagner loved Norse mythology.

There's a whole musical subgenre called "national socialist black metal." The lyrical content of black metal has, since the beginning basically, been heavily focused on Norse mythology, Viking traditions, etc. One of the members of the pioneering black metal band Darkthrone called himself Fenrir, IIRC. So NS black metal more or less automatically fuses the traditions, though it's not clear they were ever unfused.

The problem is that Viking mythology is by no means limited to neo-Nazis. I watch very few superhero movies, but wasn't there a big Marvel smash hit (or two, or three) based on Norse mythology?

Fair enough. But he started his campagin with a Nazi tattoo. He decided to run for Senate knowing that he had a totenkopf on his chest. Maybe he fully believes everything he is saying and will be a progressive champion in the Senate but you have to agree that both getting that tattoo in the first place and then subsequently not covering it up for years and years displays some very questionable judgment.
At each town he has addressed this issue directly. He has apologized

Circumstances: He got the tattoo while on leave in Croatia while serving in the Marine Corps, stating it happened during a night of drinking.
Context: Platner said he chose the design, which has been identified as a Totenkopf (a symbol associated with the Nazi SS), from options on a parlor wall, believing it was just a "tough-looking" skull and bones.

This happened in 2007 when he was a 23 yo kid in the military. He has spoken directly about it in every town hall meeting. Mainers seem to be accepting his explanation and apology.

“… The seats were vacated after former state Rep. Josh Siegel (D) was elected as Lehigh County executive and former state Rep. Dan Miller (D) won a spot on the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas.

Democrats were expected to keep both blue-leaning seats.

… There are three more special elections for the Pennsylvania House later this spring — two races in March and one in May. All three seats were held by Republicans.

Democrats also won a special election for a state House seat in Maine on Tuesday….”

There seems to be a strong anti-incumbent trend going on within the GOP right now, as a number of incumbent GOP Senators and Congressmen are being challenged by even more right-wing (if that's possible) populists and they're often trailing in the polls. One local example here in NC is that Phil Berger, the longtime majority leader of the NC State Senate, is in the fight of his political life against longtime Rockingham County Sherriff Sam Page. Berger seemed unassailable in his deep red gerrymandered Rockingham County/Northern Guilford County district, but he's alienated some people there by tying to bring in gambling and casinos, which didn't go over well with Evangelicals, and many polls have him trailing Page in the GOP primary, despite spending at least $3 million so far on TV and social media ads, most of which just attack Page relentlessly (Page has far less money than Berger and has run almost no TV ads). Much of Berger's campaign money is coming from groups like Duke Energy. Even with the huge money advantage many people think that Page has a good chance to win.

I'm sure Page is as bad or likely worse, but Phil Berger losing his seat would be some incredible schadenfreude.

trump fatigue may have finally set in for non-MAGAs
I (and many others no doubt) have been waiting for signs of this since 2017 with no luck, and I'll admit that I have become cynical that non-liberals would ever tire of Dear Leader and his antics. But I have gotten the sense over the last few months that you're right and that some real sense of MAGA fatigue and exhaustion is settling in over the bulk of the country. It happens to nearly all political movements at one point, no matter how successful they have been. At the same time I'm still skeptical that my senses are correct and it wouldn't surprise me at all to be disappointed in November yet again. All I can do is make sure I vote in the fall and pray that enough people really are sick of this man and his movement to finally get off their butts and vote - and that if it is a blue wave that Trump 2.0 won't find some way to overturn the results. We're living in dark, dark times for our country.

Indeed. He's been one of the main roadblocks to teacher pay in this state, and a major enemy of public ed in general. I've heard many stories over the years about him from people I know who live in Rockingham County or who have dealt with him and it's nearly all negative and bad, and even some Republicans I know despise him personally. Page is a hardcore MAGA Trumper, but he wouldn't have nearly the clout or influence or power that Berger has over the legislature, especially at first. I hope Page clobbers him in the primary, but it will be hard to overcome being outspent probably 50-to-1 in advertising alone. There are reports that Berger may spend over $5 million to win the primary, and nearly all of that money comes from wealthy right-wingers like Art Pope and corporations he's helped like Duke Energy.

I have no problem with his explanation of the circumstances in which he originally got the tattoo. I find more problematic his explanation of why it took the issue being brought to light on the campaign trail for him to change/cover it.

It is quite an "imperfection"-to say the least

agree

He got the skull & bones thinking it was "tough looking" when he was a 23 yo in the Marines.

A good question would be how old was he when it was pointed out to him it was also a reference to NAZIs. I do not know the answer, but maybe you know ?

In 2024, 36% of eligible voters did not even bother to show up to vote. If we can just motivate 5-10% of those to vote against MAGA/Trump it will be a Blue tsunami
