This seems like a dumb strategy to me unless the general election is a slam dunk. If your endorsed candidate loses in the primary, your butthurt followers stay home in November. If your endorsed candidate wins, he's likely crazy, which puts off the normies in your own party and fires up the opposition. But who said Trump wasn't capable of a dumb strategy?
