This is incorrect. According to info from the press conference this morning, runway 33 is the busiest single runway in the US.I have seen a similar explanation on Reddit with a few more details from a pilot.
1. The helo flight ceiling should have been 400 feet but may have drifted higher.
2. The runway (33) that 5432 was landing at is not commonly used so the helo training flight would not immediately think that was the vector that atc was referring to and when they saw the other aircraft it was easy to assume that was what atc was warning about.
3. 5432's traffic avoidance system to warn of conflicting aircraft wouldn't work below 1000'.
Same here man. DCA is always my choice when flying into Washington DC, which I do frequently, because of ease of access to the Metro. Now that the Silver Line extends out to Dulles, I will probably shift over there.Such a horrible tragedy. I don't mean to personalize it, but as much as I love being able to fly into Reagan (and do so 3-4 times a year on average), it has always amazed me we have a major airport in that location. There's just so much air traffic in that small area. I remember touring Georgetown and wondering how the students can concentrate. You might as well plant a college in the middle of three runways.
I've wondered many times if the air traffic controllers at Reagan could have watched the plane fly into the Pentagon on 9/11. If not, their line of sight was not far off. I'm sure many of them saw this collision happen in real time. I can't imagine the trauma of experiencing that.
Guess MTV's Real World Boston didn't prepare him for this. The new Transportation Secretary seemed completely unprepared for the press conference. I guess it’s a tough spot when ultimately your job is to gut the FAA and NTSB, the agencies we will rely on for answers to this situation. Maybe the professionals who actually run these (and other government angencies) agencies shouldn’t be replaced by political loyalists after all.
He’s still trying to get someone to tell him the race and gender of the air traffic controller involved before he proceeds. How many hours (minutes?) are we away from Trump tweeting about how wokeness and DEI caused this tragedy? You know it’s coming. That dude has such an immense talent in being the absolute worst person at the absolute worst moment in absolutely every possible scenario.
Still too early to know for sure but this seems like it was just a MASSIVE fuckup by the helicopter pilot. I haven't seen anything yet to suggest anyone else did something wrong. The overcrowding of that air space could also probably bear some blame, but the worst thing possible is to have anyone, and especially the leader of the country, suggesting individuals should be blamed where the evidence does not show they did anything wrong.“Why didn't the control tower tell the helicopter what to do instead of asking if they saw the plane. This is a bad situation that looks like it should have
been prevented. NOT GOOD!!!”
The air traffic controller DID tell the helicopter pilot what to do. He was very precise in telling the chopper to pass behind the AA flight once he verified the chopper pilot had visual contact with the plane. Trump needs to shut the fuck up.
You are not wrong. I've run out of adjectives to describe how bad he is at simply being a human being. How many hours (minutes?) are we away from Trump tweeting about how wokeness and DEI caused this tragedy? Lived in DC for many years and you see planes doing lots of odd things around DCA because of short runways, no-fly areas over the city, tall buildings on the takeoff/approach path in Rosslyn, etc. I remember one time I was in a tall building in Crystal City, immediately on the other side of DCA, and watched a plane a few hundred feet off the ground flying over the river toward the airport but West to East on a path perpendicular to any of the runways before pulling up and banking away. No idea what that was about. Helicopters are all over the place all the time. Most everyone that's been in DC for an extended time has a story of an aborted landing. It's an incredibly convenient airport, but not without drawbacks. And the view on takeoff and landing is second to none - gets you every time, no matter how many times you've seen it.Such a horrible tragedy. Well then, look forward to seeing the new pentagon leadership investigate this. Leadership always rises to the occasion especially in a tragedy.Still too early to know for sure but this seems like it was just a MASSIVE fuckup by the helicopter pilot. Yeah, that view out the left side on approach is jawdropping. I'd put the approach to LGA out the left side as you're over Brooklyn up there with it, but DCA might take it, especially at night.Lived in DC for many years and you see planes doing lots of odd things around DCA because of short runways, no-fly areas over the city, tall buildings on the approach path in Rosslyn, etc. I remember one time I was in a tall building in Crystal City, immediately on the other side of DCA, and watched a plane a few hundred feet off the ground flying over the river toward the airport but West to East on a path perpendicular to any of the runways before pulling up and banking away. Unless the helicopter pilot was a woman or a minority, you know they will twist themselves into a pretzel to absolve the military pilot of any responsibility for this collision. If the helicopter pilot was a woman or minority it will be a DEI problem created by Biden.Well then, look forward to seeing the new pentagon leadership investigate this.
