Absolutely chaotic end to Africa's cup. Looking forward to no holds barred insanity at the world cup. This Twitter thread does a really good job with videos but I'll try to summarize.



African cup final between Morocco and Senegal. Leading up to the match, Senegal has been complaining about corruption and referee bias while Morocco is claiming it's overblown.

0 to 0 in stoppage time. Senegal scores the apparent game winner from a corner kick but looking at the replay, it's pretty clear that the Senegal player pulled down his defender to get a clear shot at the goal. Goal disallowed.

A minute or two later, Senegal apparently fouls a Moroccan player in their box. A penalty kick is awarded but the refs want to check the video to be sure.

Ref goes over to check the video and in the meantime, Senegal and Morocco are getting into a dust up. Senegal players want to fight fans and Senegal fans start pouring on to the field to fight the Moroccan players and the refs.

They eventually get the fans off the field and the ref awards Morocco their penalty kick. Senegal coach tells his team we're leaving based on his frustration with the refs and pulls his team to the locker room before the kick is taken. The entire team save one player goes back to the locker room and the tournament organizers begs/threatens them to come back on the field. They come back on the field a full 10 minutes later.

The Moroccan player takes a ridiculously soft penalty kicked that is easily saved.

They go to extra time and Senegal wins the game. The big controversy is Senegal probably should have lost with an abandoned match.

it wasn't just a "soft penalty."

what brahim diaz did with the failed panenka was a truly ridiculous and all-time blunder.

imagine that you have a basketball player step up to shoot a championship game-winning free throw with less than a second on the clock in overtime and he decides to attempt a trick shot. that's what happened here. horrific stuff.

We've all seen plenty of Chip shots to the middle assuming the goalkeeper will guess one way or the other. Obviously looks terrible when the goalie doesn't dive but it's not unheard of.

But when you get to select your kicker and you're not one of five on a shootout, you would presumably have the skill to put it in the back of the net no matter which way the goalie dives.

Sunday night was a busy one for two Senegal goalkeepers in their 1-0 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final win over Morocco in Rabat - Édouard Mendy saved Brahim Diaz's penalty, and Yehvann Diouf protected Mendy's towel from ball boys.

That was absolutely crazy. And ball boy shenanigans happen more than they should. It wouldn't be that hard for the foot of crackdown on it with either fines after the game or yellow cards to the bench during the game.

obviously panenkas aren't unheard of, lmao. the shot literally has a name. but i can see how you went there with my imperfect basketball analogy - i don't think we've ever seen a basketball player attempt a trick shot on a game winning FT.

a player like diaz attempting one in that situation is just crazy arrogance and lack of self awareness.

legends like zidane, pirlo, totti, alexis sanchez, etc. have pulled them off in in big games. brahim diaz can't hold any of those guy's jock straps.

Going down the middle on a penalty is common, Doing so with a Panenka much less so.
