The only job I ever worked where I was able to join something like a union, was my first job after college. The place I went to work had an association, not a union, where persons with at least a four-year scientific degree, who were not in management positions, could be represented by an "association" who would bargain for annual wages and benefits and act as a conduit for workplace grievances. Because I was coming to this job fresh from many years of anti-union indoctrination in North Carolina, my immediate reaction was something like, "that's not an association, that's a union." That was a mistake on my part. I should have supported the association with what was a very small deduction from my bi-monthly paycheck. Yet another entry on the long list of "If I knew then what I know now . . .."
