I totally realize it’s not the same, plus my experience dates back to the early 1990s, but after my frustrating attempt to play in the Guatemala City league I played a couple of seasons in other leagues in and around the town of Antigua, Guatemala (eventually coaching too).

One league was in Antigua and played in a pretty nice gym.

The big roof there. My team was actually called “Don Bosco” and it’s where I got my message board handle. We played at least two games a week - everybody played in the same gym. Our sponsor was a bar where I worked called La Bota Tejana. The owner, like the coach in Guatemala City that I mentioned on page 1, was an All-Guatemala center in her youth - her family was full of athletes - her little brother had been the National Middleweight boxing champ. She professed to be Guatemala’s only licensed female boxing ref!

There was a 2-Gringo rule in that league and one team had a former Division III player - 6-5 - who had played at Whittier College (Nixon’s Pre-dook school). My team was good as was his and we battled it out. The bar owner would close up during our games and lead everyone down the street to watch - then back to the bar we’d go.

Here’s one of our incarnations…

I also played in a league in the next town over -- Jocotenango. Those games were played on Sundays on an outdoor court right in the middle of town in front of the church. There would often hundreds of people at those games...milling around, food carts, and music, a Poppi-fut game going on nearby. That was a real carnival atmosphere -- a lot of fun -- about as much as I've ever had playing organized hoops in fact. Here's a shot of that court.

Basketball was never close to fútbol of course in popularity but those were the days of The Dream Team and I fell in with some of the more basquetbolista Guatmaltecos anywhere.

Just an interlude - now back to Escazu - by the way do yall have a mascot?

It was time for a showdown with our Santa Ana neighbors who have built their team around three American guys. The first surprise of the night was that they had traded one of their American guys the day before to Heredia, trading a wing for a post player. The second surprise was that their American guard who had a badly sprained wrist suited up to play (honestly I was kind of expecting it). The final surprise came during the warmups. Dirk was shadowing one of our guys and stepped on someone's foot: his ankle swelled up immediately (out for a couple of weeks). Can I ever have a complete team?

We had a strong first half on offense, managing a lead of eight points that would withstand little runs from them. We'd build a small lead, they would close it down. At the half we were all tied up. Their American post player was unstoppable with 22 points in the first half, scoring from all over the floor. Dirk is our best post defender (and team defender) so his absence was definitely felt in the first half. At halftime we adjusted coverage, having our second post just stand in the middle of the paint on the weak side.

Unfortunately, our offense had a lull in the third quarter. We stopped their post player but their guard started going off hitting some timely threes. Before I knew it they had a six point lead and some of our guys were in precarious fouls situations. I brought in our youngest player, a kid who's still a high school senior. He's a pesky defender and a pretty decent shooter. It's one of those subs that make a coach look good...the kid hit two corner 3s and played some gritty defense. The rest of our guys fed off the kid's energy. We went on a 15-2 scoring run in five minutes that broke the game open. Our American guy was aggressive going to the basket and ended up with 26 points. The opposing coach (one of the few nemesis I have here...guy's a dick) burned two of his timeouts. Even when I subbed the kid out we maintained our lead to close out the game.

Stat of the game
-We have been shooting 67% from the free throw line for the year (would like that at 70%). We had a horrible night from the line making 14-30. Most of those misses came late in the game in hand (should have won by 20). My crazy Dominican went 5-12 and my starting lefty center was just 1-5.
