Not the same but the two most surprising was a free show after a football game by Sha Na Na where they just killed it. Pretty much Woodstock and not that terrible TV show.

The other was a John Sebastian concert in Carmichael in 1970 right after the Lovin' Spoonful . It was him and another guitarist. He played guitar and harmonica and put on a tremendous show. He was a brilliant harmonica player. His remarks that Carmichael had the acoustics of an institutional bathroom was also repeated for years.

Nice! It was January. We had just had some a winter storm (all ice, of course), so it was questionable whether the show was even going to happen. But they made the trip down from Chapel Hill.

It was extremely cold outside and the Milestone didn’t have much to offer in terms of heat, so they set up a space heater in the room where the bar is that everybody was standing around before the music started. The band was standing around it too. I brought a friend of mine who was not at all familiar with the Archers at that point (though he became a big fan afterward). and I told him I thought the guys standing around the space heater with us were the guys in the band. He thought rock musicians were supposed to look a certain way, and those dudes just looked like everyday normal dudes, so he said, “There’s no way those guys are in a band.”
That’s funny. I feel like I saw AOL at the milestone, but I don’t remember it being cold, though.

Pink Floyd - Bobby Dodd Stadium Atlanta 1994. Quadrophonic sound - really misty/foggy night that made the light/lasers look really cool.
Hey, I was there. I went all three nights.

The first night I had field tickets about 20 rows back. The girl that went with me was short and couldn't see well. I thought it was funny when an older lady seated beside me, at least 60, asked if it was ok if she sparked up a joint. Of course, I answered, only if you share. :)

The other two nights I had upper deck seats. The third night I took a friend from my second job, who was pregnant. I saw a couple of people from my full time job. The next day at work there were rumors that I was going to be a dad.

I've been to more than 100 concerts because of work, but the best concert I ever attended was my very first one.

Human Rights Now
San Jose, Costa Rica
1988

Lineup included Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Peter Gabriel and Tracy Chapman.
I went to Lallapalooza in 1992, my neighbor won tickets off of the radio and took me with her.

Great lineup, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Red Hot Chili peppers, Ice Cube Ministry, Lush.

went to that as well - Walnut Creek in Raleigh. It started around noon and when Ministry came on around 7pm they piled up all of the trash and blankets in the lawn and lit a huge bonfire and a big mosh pit swirled around it.

Was thinking about this...about the 100 shows (probably closer to 15 as I started making the tally over the course of a decade). The company I worked for was the biggest sponsor of concerts in Central America; I was the guy that negotiated most of those sponsorships which meant that I had to go to most shows (I didn't even like concerts that much, which was a negotiating edge). Producing musical events is a high risk, high reward type of deal. The biggest risk is for the producer of the show to not comply with the artist rider and provoke a no-show (happened once with a Guns N Roses show...surprise...producer lost $600k on that show). That risk disappears as soon as the artist starts singing; up until that moment I was always a nervous wreck.

We sponsored all sorts of shows covering most genres popular in Latin America: English pop, Latin Pop, classical, heavy metal, punk, alternative, etc (no hip hop or country). The top 5 shows we did:
-Metallica
-Roger Waters
-Paul McCartney
-Marc Anthony / Chayanne
-Lady Gaga

Though my personal favorite was Green Day. It was the last stop of their tour...they played for more than 3 hours and just had a good old time.

In no particular order..
-Chapel Thrill - Kenan Stadium - Beach Boys with Brian Wilson, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Bonnie Raitt - around 1980
-Bruce Springsteen, Tunnel of Love tour, Smith Center, 1988
-The Who, Carter Finley Stadium, 1989
-The Rolling Stones, Carter Finley Stadium, 1989 and 1994
-Pink Floyd, Carter Finley Stadium, 1994
-U2, Georgia Dome, 1997
-CSN&Y, Charlotte Coliseum, 2000
-Paul McCartney, 2019, PNC

In no particular order, just some memorable ones for me:

Wu Tang (part of the group rather), Melkweg Amsterdam and also at Stade de France, 1997
Redman, Melkweg during Cannabis Cup 2007
Wu + Nas Raleigh 2023
Marilyn Manson Heineken Music Hall 2009 (fucking insane time)
Ghostface + Raekwon Berkeley 2018

I was also there for the second Lalapalooza that came to Walnut Creek. Was that the year the mosh pit was all mud and people were throwing it up in the air? My mind was playing tricks on me and it appeared to be swirling bats. I went to three(I think) at Walnut Creek so couldn't remember which one that was.

Was really disappointed to miss the first Lalapalooza as i was scheduled to move into my dorm room that day.

I can’t say that I heard that tale, but I don’t doubt it’s authenticity. Bruce is cool like that and I can see him out and about the night before the gig there, looking for something to do. I’ll bet his acoustic set at Solicitos was way cool. We’ll pretend like I was there and confirm this story. Only thing is I was 17 in 1976….
I did some grad work in Boone too.

If you’re around, I’m playing in Boone next weekend.
That wouldn't surprise me based on what I had heard about Bruce. My grandmother lived in Ocean Grove, NJ just south of Asbury Park where Bruce is from. Apparently, he would show up unannounced and play gigs at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park after he became famous.

Coldplay - 2012 Wells Fargo Center Philly
U2 - 2011 Lincoln Financial Field
Jay Z - 2014 Spectrum Center
RHCP - 2022 Bank of America Stadium (I was blaaaaaazed)

Hard to rank a #1, but I’d say my top five were Robert Earl Keen in Winston, John Prine and Iris Dement in Charlotte, the Roots in Charlotte, Jason Isbell in Durham and the Avett Brothers in Greensboro on NYE. Not sure of the years, but REK and Isbell were post-COVID, Avett Brothers 5-6 years ago, Roots were around 2007-08 and Prine was the mid 90s. Also had a blast at the Wailers at the original Ziggy’s around 2002-2003. Always preferred small to mid-sized venues.
