Bill Maher dines with The Donald

I actually find myself more aligned now with Maher then when I was younger.

In part because I’m certainly more of a “free speech” (not merely in the legal sense but, also, in the social construct) liberal. But also I think, for the most part, he fairly gives the left a hard time when it buries itself on the wrong side of 80-20 issues.

I think both parties are … lost right now. So I’m certainly open to criticism on the institutional parties in particular.

But yanking Trump for “being nice” … eh … Maher used to criticize people for this exact same approach to Trump … and GWB for that matter. Not his best segment. And yes, this is from a couple of months back:

Maher’s a Dem on 95% of issues. He just hates the left’s woke silly nonsense.
Maher’s entire schtick is that he’s a centrist and that “The LEFT” is so far off the reservation that he has to ridicule them.

As if Obama, Hillary, Biden, and Harris are FAR LEFT.

In this trite piece about Maher’s supper with Trump, a significant percentage of Bill’s “jokes” were about Clinton’s blow jobs in the White House. He’s playing to the Right.

He regularly refers to himself as “an old school liberal” - not a centrist. Maher strongly supported Clinton/Obama/Hillary/Biden and Kamala.

It doesn't really matter what someone refers to themselves as. The proof is in the pudding. I can refer to myself as a centrist if i like but in today's political climate I'm firmly liberal. Maher is an opportunist.

Admittedly, I haven't watched him as much as you. But he seemingly leans left on most issues and realizes the current state of the republican party is a shell of itself, but champions talking points against the left that are popular amongst Trumpers in an effort to seem centrist. And the way he does it, a lot of the time to appease guests, leads you to believe he knows better.
Thanks for that explanation.

I’d probably say that he’s an erratic left-centrist, although his bigger trait is that he’s a dedicated contrarian. He’s more concerned with folks viewing him as an “independent” “free thinker” than anything else.

I was 15 when I first started watching Politically Incorrect on CC back in the day. At the time, I very much thought he was a free thinker and someone who stood on principles rather than bowing to a party or other pressures. As I grew up and learned more about politics (and life), I recognized that he was far less principled than I previously thought and seemingly far more interested in being seen as a deep thinker than working to be one.

Seems like we've got a couple of those in here. Maher is far more entertaining than ours but that's a very low bar. Of course unlike Maher, ours very rarely give more than passing criticism (if you can even call it that) of Trump and Maga...

Interesting video thanks for sharing. I am not a big follower of Maher so I don't know him as well as others.

My main takeaway is what many have already said. Trump is a fraud and con man, period. He's also one of the all time great bullshitters and shmoozers (a common trait of narcissists as others have stated.)

But I disagree with those saying Maher is just being a "bosider" when he takes some swipes at liberals also. At some point, no matter how much we all despise Trump, Dems better take a serious look at themselves and overall platform. Trump, yes that very mad man, just whipped the Dems pretty good not long ago. If Dems don't back off those 80/20 issues (I like how someone put that), get ready for a 3rd Trump term, or continuation of MAGA through Vance, Rubio, Jordan, Johnson,or any other fake spineless MAGA politician.

My theory is that trump will say anything to anybody at any time if he thinks it helps him in the moment. Whether a statement are true or not is completely irrelevant to him. Naturally, someone like that could be charming.

Rachel Maddow years ago, said, don't listen to what they say. Watch what they do. trump is a stupid and evil man, and he is one of the most stupid and evil leaders in my lifetime. He will forever be a national embarrassment.

Maher can be entertaining, but who cares.

Trump being deferential while on a (as much as possible given one is president and one is an entertainer on TV) level playing field is not surprising.
It’s what one would expect of a bully, which Trump is, imo.
