The SMU Mustangs are 11-2 and average 90.1 points per contest. They shoot 50% from the field and 34% from Three. They average 18 free throws a game and hit 77% of them. They average 19 assists per game, 11 turnovers, and 9 steals. They are a team in motion. While stopping you is not their forte, they play “offensively” enough that pace becomes their defense. Putting you in their rear mirror is their goal. Big Little Man Boopie Edwards (6-0, 43% from Three) leads the way with 19.9 ppg and 7 assists. Jaron Pierre on the wing (6-5, #5) is a scorer at his 3rd school (18.7 ppg and 5.3 rpg) while B.J. Edwards is 6-3 and scores 13.7 and sneak rebounds (5.8) – he also passes well with 5.6 assists per game. Corey Washington scores at 12.7 from a forward slot and Turkish Giant Samit Yigitoglu (7-2) hits for 11.7 and grabs 8.9 rebounds (he’s a space eater). Note* – All five starters average double figures and everyone rebounds. Miller, Edwards, Pierre, and Washington are also old – they have a great deal of experience. This team is composed of two generations in fact as their bench men tend to be super-frosh (ESPN #6 recruiting class). Toombes and Holmes are both 6-10 and Jermaine O’Neal Jr. (yeah, THAT Jermaine O’Neal’s son) is a versatile 6-5 guard. Sam Walters, once of both Alabama and Michigan, an old man at 21 years is 6-9 and experienced too.
For the second game in a row Carolina faces high-powered offense…this time in a hostile arena and against a much better team. Today’s tilt is a tall order and some of the prognosticators have called it for the Mustangs.
Frontline: Veesaar is down but Caleb Wilson has sterling arcs. Stevenson is athletic. Brown is low while High is a smart guy.
Wings: Bogavac remains in the doldrums while Powell is a bit above the fold and fired up.
Guards: Kyan Evans looks to continue his good play while Seth Trimble has the look of a Leader. Derek Dixon is primed and Jaydon Young soars.
Overall: Scary one folks…Moody Coliseum is an old school barn and the students are on the sidelines. Thankfully school is out of session for today’s game. That ought to be less of a positive than it might be during the semester. But SMU is gunning for #12 ranked Carolina because frankly their gaudy 11 win season marks no significant victories and they’d like one. Carolina has great talent with a hard-charging man-to-man fight through the screen defense anchoring their play while the Southern Methodists fire away – from relatively close range. This will not be a barrage from long-range like FSU, these guys will value floor position much more than the Flingers from Florida. How Seth Trimble on Boopie Miller and multiple defenders on Jaron Pierre do will likely be the crucial measure. For Carolina the two freshmen, Wilson and Dixon, look very important today. Of course Wilson is the all-star (and he’ got the ritmos) but Dixon is the wild card. Outside of that, this one is about shot selection on offense and hard-nosed jock-pulling defense. The Euro-BIGS will go at one another with fervor today and cleverness will win the day. It appears to be a toss-up…the biorhythms do not favor Carolina nor does the setting. Significant play from Trimble (with his Fire), Wilson, Dixon, and a surprise off the bench (Young). If I was betting on Carolina today it would be from the heart. I’m a homer – Las Vegas says UNC by 2 as of early this morning. Ritmos say SMU by 6. Ritmo writer says Carolina by 4.
