Carolina has been playing basketball against Virginia for a month shy of 115 years. During that period the two schools have played 198 times with Carolina claiming victory 136 times. That healthy margin of victory aside, Carolina is 38 and 45 in games played in Charlottesville. It is a hostile environment and the students, alumni, and fans of Mr. Jefferson’s College have no love, nor even any ‘like’ for UNC. This is the longest running, consistently played hate-match in the South though UNC has played dook more times (that mess began in 1920 – UNC leads 142-112 there). Suffice it to say that the Tar Heels have made the trip to Charlottesville many times over the past 100+ years and we’ve won a good many games but the Cavs have prevailed quite often. And in general, the dislike cultivated over the years is very strong. This year UVA has a very good team and is ranked higher than Carolina at present. They shoot, rebound, and protect the ball well and have great size. New Coach Ryan Odom, the son of Dave Odom, has left behind the plodding control game known as Bennett-Ball and has the team playing at an 84 points a game clip and winning by a margin of 17 on average.

Frontcourt: Caleb Wilson has good arcs while Veesaar has his worst of the season. Jarin Stevenson is very solid across the board. High is bottomed out. Brown could click.

Wings: Bogavac is Newtonian while Jonathan Powell dials in as super motivated and physical.

Guards: Seth Trimble’s best asset is a middlin’ smarts while Kyan Evans is on the Mensa Chart. Derek Dixon brings a great deal of enthusiasm/fire to Virginia and Jaydon Young is soaring athletically.

Overall: UVA plays 9 players, six men over 24 minutes a game and 3 more get over 15 per game. UNC has three iron men with over 30 minutes (Wilson, Veesaar, and Trimble), three earning over 22 per (Evans, Bogavac, and Stevenson) and two more with over 15 (Powell and Dixon). All that may very well be in flux for Carolina of late with Derek Dixon and Jaydon Young entering the starting line-up of late. Today’s opening five? No telling. The Cavaliers have a couple of Europeans that start consistently in 6-9 Belgian Thijs De Ridder, a 23 year-old Freshman with five years of professional experience under his belt (16.1ppg, 6.2rpg, 43% from Three) and 7-0 German Johann Grunloh (normal age freshman averaging 8.6ppg and 6.8rpg – shoots 50% from the line btw). Joining the EU boys are 6-7 Sam Lewis (Toledo) with 9.8 ppg and 37% from Three, Dallin Hall (6-4, 5.8ppg, 4.4apg, 32% from three, BYU), and Malik Thomas (6-5, 13.6, 36% from Three, USC, SFU). Others to watch for are 7-0 Ugonna Onyenso of Nigeria, Kentucky, and Kansas State (6.5ppg, 4.6rpg, and 2.5 blocks) – Quick Chance Mallory, a real freshman from Charlottesville plays good minutes and is a big pest with 2 steals a game, almost 4 assists, 4 rebounds and 10ppg. Devin Tillis is a 6-7 fifth year senior with 5.4ppg and 41% from Three – he is the oldest player the Heels have faced this year – he turned 25 years old last Thursday. Trouble may be Jacari White who comes to Virginia from North Dakota State and averages 10ppg and has shot 32 for 64 from Three so far. He takes 5 per game. Carolina will not have a size advantage against UVA today and the potential of battles between Wilson and De Ridder and Veesaar and Grunloh is real. Lotta Europe there.

Carolina has good biorhythms overall though the Veesaar marks are troubling. The Tar Heels are pretty smart today while the Cavalier benchmen look fired up. The tip-off has been moved up to Noon – presumably so that access to the game can be made safer given the chaos caused by The Weather Report. Hard to say how this will play out – should they treat it like a genuine snow game and throw open the doors, filling the place with a festive glom of students the atmosphere may be raucous – should they let the alumni seats stay empty then good for the Heels. At any rate it will be cold. Heels to watch for…Stevenson and Young – Wilson as always– Powell and Bogavac look good on the wings. A few folks must absolutely must defy the arcs for Carolina to have a chance. The Gamblers say Virginia by 6.5. Sadly we must agree. But should Veesaar Step Up all bets are off and Carolina could win a close one. By all accounts we are the Underdog.

The three best performing players on the team are Wilson, Veesaar, and Trimble.
I don't worry about those guys . It's the rest of the team that is suspect.

Would love a starting 5 and bench with Wilson, Veesaar, Nickel, Trimble, and Cadeau and Washington and Lubin spelling Wilson and Veesaar, but we have the team we have so let's hope for an upset today (y)

Can’t overstate how massive of a win this would be

A lot of fun matchups in the front court. Wilson/Veesaar have their work cut out

Made FTs and 3Ps will matter a lot. Going to need 80+ for sure

Hate to say I’ll believe it when I see it. First game that’s felt like that this year

Trimble’s defense has been horrible since FSU, although he was better against Notre Dame.

This would be a huge win for Carolina. Pomeroy has Virginia by 9 and barttorvic has Virginia by 11.

If we can win this game I will feel much better about our team. Of course, I don't see us winning this game. Hope I am wrong.

Spurts of great intense defense followed by lapses which yet again lead to an avalanche of open threes. Also had two really bad offensive possessions by Caleb.
