To call the Buckeyes Sharpshooters is appropriate. They hit 51% from Two, 35% from Three, and 78% from the Line. Their leading scorer and soul, Bruce Thornton (#2, 6-2, Sr) scores 21 ppg and shoots 60% from 2, 50% from 3, and 86% from the stripe. The team scores 87 ppg. The Buckeyes (a mainly poisonous brown nut by the way), are an older team with its top four players averaging 21 years of age. The German, Christoph Tilly(from Santa Clara) is 22, 7-feet tall and averages 13.8 ppg and 5.9 rpg. Beside him is #14 Brandon Noel (in from Wright State) is 22 years old, 6-8 and averages 8.4 ppg and 4.7 rpg but is capable of better numbers – he’s 22. Thornton is 22. The two contributing youngsters are John/Juni Mobley, a sophomore guard, who, at 6-1 averages 13.8 ppg. They’ve got a Freshman phenom in Amare Bynum (6-8) who is scoring at 8.4 ppg but can explode. This team is dangerous – and cannot be taken lightly (I don’t think anyone is doing that btw). Thornton is a legit game-changer – he’s actually been on the same campus for Four Years – he’s been in Columbus, OH much longer than Coach Diebler by several years. They will play by spacing the floor, driving to the rim but having no problem with stopping and popping the 14 footer. They take 25 Treys a game and make 8.6 of them. They Score A Lot Of Points.
Frontcourt: Wilson has the Fire. Veesaar is athletic and full of ‘want-to.’ Brown is well above the fold. High is strong.
Wings: Bogavac soars. Stevenson is a very smart young man. Powell brings savvy to the court.
Guards: Trimble is back and primed to play. He’s also sharp. Evans is very good across the board and Dixon is physical.
Overall: We’re the second game with St. John’s and Kentucky going at it in a 12:30 tip. Reds v Blues is the theme of the day. Our Sky Blues are the favorite for some while the Reds (of OSU) are picked by others. A solid start is important. We’ve got the E-Arcs to kick it off well. Stopping Thornton and his cohort of 13 points per game scorers, Royal and Mobley, is imperative. Making OSU shoot under 50% will be the telling mark. Getting into their bench beyond Bynum will also be telling.
For the Heels Defense and Good Shot Selection will be The Way. The ball must move quickly. Inside then Out. Our BIGS can rout their Bigs.
Ultimately though, stopping Thornton – making him miss – He takes 12 shots per game from the field and makes almost 7 – make him take 15 to hit 5. Do that to the rest of the nuts. Do not foul – play straight-up, clean, Carolina Defense. Watch for a flash of zone and a run and jump here and there.
This looks like an all-around effort for Carolina and a strong comeback for Trimble. His stats may not be a stocking stuffer but his presence will pay off big.
The gamblers say Carolina by 4.5. Ritmos say Heels by 7.
