Look-In: State is 9-6 and has a conference win over Florida State and topped Notre Dame last time out in a wild one 66-65 to make their ACC record even at 2-2 (Losses to Virginia and Wake). The wolpfack also went down impressively in defeat to Kansas, Purdue, Texas, and BYU. Their best win statistically of the year was an 84-61 takedown of William and Mary. That said, this team is full of spit and vinegar and the Saturday afternoon crowd in the Lenovo/PNC/RBC Center will be full of it as well. In the paint and out, one-time Clemson Tiger Ben Middlebrooks cashes in for 9 ppg and 4 rpg. Middlebrooks plays the game with great enthusiasm. Also clocking almost-starter minutes is one-time Louisville Cardinal Brandon Huntley-Hatfield. The Two-Name former 5 Star recruit also scores 9 ppg and rebounds at 5 per game. He is much more of an insider than Middlebrooks. Wings abound for state and #10 6-4 one-time Bowling Green Falcon Marcus Hill leads the team in scoring at a 12.8 ppg clip. His game is mid-range and not from distance (6-22 from Three). One-Time Butler Bulldog Jayden Taylor (6-4, #0) is the Shooter, hitting 36% from Downtown and scoring at 12.2 ppg (he’s turnover prone). Field Marshall Michael O’Connell brings his lacrosse mindset to the court from Stanford and runs the show…he’s 6-2, scores 7 ppg and dishes out 4 assists while being a careful ball-handler. On another wing the familiar face of Kinston’s Dontrez Styles (6-6, #3) contributes 9.6 ppg and is the second leading rebounder with 4.5 rpg behind Huntley-Hatfield’s 5.1. Sophomore Dennis Parker Jr. and Senior Breon Pass have played nowhere but NC State and bring 3 ppg and 5 ppg to the court respectively. Pass is a crowd favorite and unpredictable.

Frontcourt: Washington is a smart, smart guy and Lubin is strong AND smart today. Withers outdoes them both in those categories. James Brown and Ty Claude both bring much positive energy to the game.

Wings: Powell is flying high and Ian Jackson matches him. Cade Tyson is also biorhythmically elevated.

Guards: Cadeau is topped out in the physical and the intel with a moderately high emotional arc. R.J. Davis is a thinking man’s shooter today while Seth Trimble should join Powell and Jackson in the heights.

Overall: I do not believe that I have seen this many great, not simply good, but great biorhythms gathered in a game before. Whether that means outstanding play from everyone or that the canceling out will result in a level playing field and an irresistible force meets the immovable object type of scenario remains to be seen. A calculating Cadeau is a promising prospect while soaring wings Powell, Jackson, and Trimble seems quite a sight to imagine. Thoughtful R.J. Davis probing the state defense and picking on their offense would be a great add-on. Again, I’ve got to tout the physicality AND the sharp-witted numbers for today’s game…never seen anything like it. EVERY state player that sees time has elevated arcs and EVERY Carolina player, save Davis, is likewise. Someone is likely to emerge from this high-flying logjam of circadian synchronicity. Watch for Jackson but also watch for Seth Trimble to rock out. Oh, and Drake Powell is a native-born Tar Heel, raised up in the Triangle and he knows about the relationship between Carolina and state. He lived it every day of his growing-up in North Chatham just a few miles from Chapel Hill raised by partisan Carolina alums. He knew state fans during those times as well. Need I say more. Still, this one should be hard-fought – think, after school, dirt clod fight, hard-fought – and meaningful. Las Vegas gives Carolina a 4.5 point edge. Whew. Could it be closer? The Biorhythms say Carolina by 3.

Re: State -
I'm concerned with 'Trez today in several areas: His rebounding, energy, defense, his height and his motivation for playing against his former team - I'm hoping the hype and anxiousness playing against his former team will not propel him to a great game overall. I mean, I think he will have tremendous energy to start with, and he will perhaps play well, get some buckets and perhaps some steals, blocks and rebounds in the first 20 minutes... but my hope is that will tail off in the 2nd half and he won't get more than the 9 - 10pts he averages and he will basically be a non-factor at the end.

I'm more concerned with Middlebrooks from 3pt land shooting 40%. I think he will score more today than his 9.4 average. After that, Marcus Hill is a concern.

If all three of those guys go off and have good games, it may not be any fun for the Heels.

For the Heels:
I'm hoping Seth comes back with his great play from the first 12 games - with scoring and defense - PLUS adding the passing and assists he displayed vs. SMU. After that I'm hoping RJ keeps it rolling from his great scoring game vs SMU.
Heck for that matter, let's hope the entire team plays like they did vs. SMU: JWash with the rim protection and blocks, etc.
Finally, I'm hoping Elliot doesn't turn the ball over more than 3 times today (he had 4 in only 18 minutes vs. SMU) He averages more than 3 per game for the season... that's WAAAYYYY too many for a starting point guard on a Carolina team. (Way too many)

Thought a good deal about what Styles might bring to the table today. He's a team removed from Carolina after spending a year at Georgetown but he's always gonna be from Kinston. I remember when he was at UNC they asked the other players something along the lines of "which of your teammates would you want on your side in a fight?" and most answered Styles.

Middlebrooks does shoot 40% from three but that's a measure literally of hitting 4 out of 10 shots.

Ultimately this Tar Heel squad has more talent than does state. They've also been in some hostile settings literally over and over as a team.

State only has 2 North Carolinians that play any time on their team, Pass and Styles (there's three guards too from Fayetteville, and two from Cary -- one is Keatts' son). UNC has Powell, Tyson, Claude, and Withers. I think Trimble probably 'feels it' too because Carolina is in his family. I'm not sure what any of that means but somehow I think it is significant.

State isn't good. Guard play down significantly from a season ago

Good test to see if this UNC team has figured out anything defensively over the last several games. Blowout potential if they're locked in on that end
