In the land of Gurus and historical healing vibes since Monday we’ve got to hope that The Heels have been in search of answers this week because they appear in need of some ideas on how to turn a downright porous defense back to its stingy early-season form. The Heels will try to do that in steep seated, hostile Haas Pavilion today at 4 pm Eastern Time. Some adjustments are eminent in stopping perimeter scoring – what those will be are not part of what we do here, i.e., second-guess – but things have to happen as with Carolina 2-2 in the ACC and looking up at dook, clemson, miami, virginia, state, syracuse, smu, state college, and stanford it is time to make a move up or down the standings table.
California started the season blazing hot going 12-1 (big win over UCLA in there) with only an away loss to Kansas State but has gone 1-4 in the last 5 games (losing to dook, Louisville, Virginia, and Virginia Tech – with a lone win over Notre Dame at home by one on heroics by scoring guard Dai Dai Ames). Speaking of Dai Dai Ames (whose true name is Darrin Sylvestor), he’s another team-leading scoring guard (17.3, 43% from Long Distance), the likes of which have plagued Carolina so dearly in the past few weeks. He comes to Berkeley from Chicago by way of Kansas State and Virginia and has blossomed in California. Justin Pippen joins Dai Dai in the backcourt (yes….you recognize the last name) scoring at 14.4 ppg and dishing 4 assists per. Journeyman big forward John Camden (6-8), stingy with his birthdate btw, has landed with the Golden Bears after productive stops with Memphis, Virginia Tech, and Delaware. He shoots more treys than anyone on the team and hits at 38% (13.1 ppg, 5 rpg). Chris Bell is on the wing at 6-7 – he spent two years at Syracuse where he averaged 13 points per game versus Carolina and shot 6 of 10 from Three-Point Range in two games. Haitian Big Man Lee Dort fills the post at 6-10 and is the oldest player the Heels have faced this year being born in 2002 (Elijah Davis is the oldest Heel, also born in 2002 while of regulars Bogavac and Jaydon Young were both born in 2003). Dort scores almost 9 points per game and grabs 8 boards. He spent two years at Vanderbilt before coming to Cal. He is a physical presence in the paint. Joining the big man chorus is workman Milo Ilic of Serbia and previously a player at Loyola (MD). There are other bench sitting bigs including 7 foot South Sudanese Dut, and the 6-11 Lithuanian Mantas Kočanas. Note that there are two players who played in North Carolina on the roster for the Golden Bears in the potentially dangerous DJ Campbell (Western Carolina – Watch Him) and seldom seen Nolan Dorsey of Knightdale and Campbell U. Coach Mark Madsen was, and is, a Madman.
Frontcourt: Veesaar has it. Caleb Wilson’s positive energy is good. Back-up Bigs have great to solid arcs within their own capabilities.
Wings: Jarin Stevenson has great presence of mind though his physical is depleted. Bogavac played very much within himself and well last outing and ought to continue along that track. Should Powell see minutes he should excel as he is nigh onto soaring.
Guards: Seth Trimble has what it takes to be a major contributor today. His supporting backcourt cast all look down – Evans does have fire and smarts and Jaydon Young has played well with bad ritmos – see the Wake Forest game.
Overall: Life with one’s back to the wall seems much more “normal” in the world of Kenpom, Quad One vs Quad Two Games, Lunardi’s bracketology, and the Portal. It sucks a good deal of the joy out of the sport and mainly only makes gamblers happy. At The Biorhythms I try to remember the eternal optimism of playing days and the wonder of the contest and the atmosphere and the pride and love of the alma mater when I turn to the tip-off. Last game took a lot out of me – but I am fresh and renewed for today’s tilt. Hopes for a similar light to be lit in our young men.
Cal looks good in some significant ways and Carolina has not been trending in the right direction of late. While The G-Bears don’t shoot a lot of Threes, neither did other schools of recent engagement who went off wide open against Carolina. Cal can hit, especially Camden and Ames, and they draw fouls (shooting 22 per game and hitting almost 18). They force 12 turnovers and score 15 points per game off them. There are good combinations ‘out there’ for the Heels today – finding them is the challenge of course as it always is. The previously mentioned gamblers are with the Tar Heels to the tune of calling a 6 point win. Unfortunately, the rhythms look closer and call for a 3 point victory for Carolina. Things to watch for are Carolina’s start – flat or on the rise, bench use of Bogavac,Powell, and Young, a Hands-Off approach from the officials (means rough play directed at Veesaar and Wilson won’t be called), and new defensive wrinkles on the perimeter. This really is a ‘must-win’ game.
