Down to Atlanta during a storm go the Tar Heels. In 2014 Carolina played there during a “winter weather event” and had trouble getting from the airport to their hotel, walking part of the way according to report. No problem getting to the game, over 5,000 attended, and Carolina won 78-65 led by Marcus Paige’s 19 points. The ESPN telecast was cancelled because the crew couldn’t make it and a mile away a Pistons-Hawks game was also not played because of the conditions – But The Tar Heels Persevered. Today should be a day of snow flurries throughout the morning with temperatures in the mid-20s in downtown Atlanta. Hope the guys brought their boots – hope for a similar outcome as from the heyday of now assistant coach Marcus Paige’s playing days.
Frontcourt: Veesaar continues his dip in biorhythmic fortune but good news is that he is emerging from that low. Stevenson brings the athleticism. Brown is low and High is good and strong. Caleb Wilson has A Pluses for his animal spirits and that arc is joined by a Newtonian Intel.
Wings: Bogavac is physically attuned. Powell is all Emotion/Fire. Jaydon Young is primed in heart and smart.
Guards: Kyan Evans has a P-mark that soars and he’s pretty sharp too while Derek Dixon is gangbusters across the board. Seth Trimble has a high physical/emotional combo.
Overall: The Yellowjackets have played 9 different players as starters (Carolina has tipped off with 8) so they are listed here by minutes played. They are led by 6-7 Senior from Macon, GA, Kowacie Reeves who scores at 16 ppg – He’s the only bug to have started every game this year and shoots threes at 38%--often – he’s their gunner. Lamar Washington, a 6-4 Senior from Portland, OR steps up next with almost 12 ppg and 5 rebounds – he is far and away the assists leader on this squad while being the primary ballhandler and turnover leader too. Senegalese Big Man Baye Ndongo scores at 11.5 a game and grabs 8 rebounds – he’s a Junior. Charlotte and Bowie Maryland’s Jaeden Mustaf is 6-6 and scores 8.5 a game with 4 rebounds while shooting 38% from three with a small sample size. Akai Fleming is 6-4, a Freshman and hits for 9.2 ppg–he’s one of the youngest players in the league, born in 2007. Tall man (6-10) Muhammad Sylla completes the Senegalese contingent for Tech – averaging 9.6 ppg and 7 rpg – Ndongo and Sylla make a strong frontcourt. Add in 7-foot, 300 pound sophomore Peyton Marshall (3.5ppg, 3.1rpg) and there is no lack of size on GT’s roster. Kam Craft, 6-6 Junior, is the Bomber for this squad, hitting 39% on 80 shots in just 20 minutes played per game. Chas Kelley is a Senior from Houston by way of Boston College (6-5, 4.2 ppg).
Weather does strange things. Thomas Wolfe wrote about it this way: “Snow in the South is wonderful. It has a kind of magic and mystery that it has nowhere else. And the reason for this is that it comes to people of the South not as a grim, unyielding tenant of Winter’s keep, but as a strange and wild visitor from the secret North.” ~ Thomas Wolfe. Obviously Wolfe lived in simpler times when we were not precariously knit together by electricity, microwaves, and other sorts of radiation but heed his message.
The Bugs are a collection of good players who have not clicked – they have no impressive wins this season but they have been a pain for Carolina for some time now (always?) and trips to Atlanta can be tumultuous in January. Beware. Carolina is picked by 10.5 by the gamblers – Watch Caleb Wilson carefully today – he should soar and be joined in their way by Stevenson and Bogavac while Derek Dixon truly comes into his own as the point man. Kyan Evans should begin to settle into a strong supporting role and today ought to be the day that Jaydon Young sees some light. Carolina should beat the spread by 5 to 6 points today.
